  1. Yeah they will, but its a good form of stimulation for the axolotl aswell as the keeper.
  2. The water in the ponds down here in Christchurch is well over 24 during the day at the moment and they are fine but I guess it drops at night. I would say they would be fine but only way to find out for sure is add one for a few days and watch its behaviour, If like most other amphibians it should grow fast and thrive in the warmth, Axolotls sure do.
  3. I'll also clarify I do not hate Animates but have had experiences where there is either to many dead fish or whitespot and finrot are apparent in their "for sale" tanks, Also I overheard a staff member advising someone with Jewels to add some Neons for affect. Food more like!
  4. Also you probably know already but take into account they like slow moving to still water. Have you thought about some sort of minnow or cold water guppy as feeder fish and to make the tank look cool, It is something I have been experimenting with over the last year, Guppies seem to be best as they don't hassle the axolotls at all and suprisingly handle the 12 degree nights we have down here. I find my guppy tank more than keeps the tanks stocked. Danios handle cold so maybe they would work, Just need to watch they don't chew on the axolotls gills like goldfish have been known to do.
  5. I'm wondering the same thing? There seems to be a lot of species and the I don't recognize it from the picture I had found on google.
  6. Yes but regardless of what they make off the fish if they choose to have them they should atleast be able to answer basic questions, If you went into Harvey Norman surely you would expect the staff to know about the products.
  7. Going back to the topic, here in Christchurch we have a guy called Daniel at Animates and he is the "fish specialist". Generally you will find no matter what store you go to if you ask them a question they will jump on the phone to Daniel. I have found the advice to be good, nothing special just good! Animates is all about the up-sells, anyone that has talked to someone who works there about their incentive plan would agree
  8. Agred! I am only new 2 this forum but u wil soon learne that speling mistacks have to be 1 of my pet hats.
  9. Agreed, I mean put a heavy bookshelf in the corner and stack 1000 books on it and I'm sure it would weigh the same, Would you think twice about doing this?
  10. Do you possibly have a picture, I think this may have been what I got the other day from the stream down the road and have put in my axolotl tank to see how it goes. sounds like it will be better than the oxy weed I have in there currently. Thanks
  11. Oxy weed grows well with with them, Duckweed is a good idea too, it makes the axolotls feel safe to hover below the surface.
  12. I just use live daphnia, Once the fish are free swimming they are big enough to eat the babies and they will stay on daphnia and occasionally ground up flake food until they are large enough for bloodworms.
  13. Great I have got some old sponges that have been in use and some ceramic noodles, am going to get rid of the meth blue today with the carbon i got today then put new filter media in. should i leave the carbon in for 6 weeks or take out after a few days? also how often should i clean the gravel? thanks
  14. There is an abundance of frogs down here, (south island)One place is just mad, I take around 100 tadpoles per year and don't tell anyone about it, Its on my uncles farm and I like to think that they will slowly spread from there, I have done things down there to try and attract different types of food for the frogs and tadpoles and they really are thriving, my axolotls reap the reward of my hard work for about a month of each year, Coming up in around 3 days!! I have heard trout pellets are good and I also try and feed mine worms when i can get hold of some.
  15. Do I still leave the sponges in there or fully use ceramic noodles?
  16. Somewhere, Haha I will search it today since the weather is so crap. What else do you feed yours? Ever tried tadpoles?
  17. cool, Can you shed some light on the cost involved, Maintenance off the media and anything that can go wrong using it, I do not know anywhere near what I need to know regarding filters, Up until now I thought they needed to be kept very clean but am learning lots so am keen to know more
  18. Yeah I mean the small box like corner filters run by air pump, I have gravel and filter sponges in mine, the gravel seems to hold the filter sponge in place well and just compacts everything, I do water changes twice a week.
  19. Is there anything that can go wrong using Peat?
  20. Are corner gravel filters sufficient for a 200litre guppy tank with around 30 fish? I want to take the small filter out for a different tank
  21. Thanks, I have looked into these but have thought maybe with what I have ( infusoria and daphnia I may be able to do it ) you think not? Microworms would defenitely be my choice out of the two but I have heard it can smell?
  22. Thanks, I am interested. Will look into it in the new year
  23. So I am new to breeding betta but am not going to badly, I am only raising around 30 a batch so would like to increase this to maybe 100 to make it worth the time it takes up, Is the problem that I am only using infusoria and then after that onto daphnia? I have a tank where infusoria is so think you can not see through but the water is in great condition and then they have as much daphnia as they can eat? Any suggestions what else I could do to get higher numbers
  24. From what you have said I would guess It is crossbred, Maybe green snakeskin x black tuxedo?
