  1. So I had set up my Juwel Rio 180 after getting it in the weekend, but was unhappy with how it looked. I pulled it apart and learned The Pooper Scooper I bought from Mitre 10 is great for getting gravel out. Sqaure shaped to get gravel from corners, and gaps small enough to stop gravel but let water through. Then I stuck in a Juwel background and terraces and learned Huggies baby wipes are awesome for getting silicone off fingers. Now waiting for tomorrow, I have washed a bag of Daltons sand to put in when the silicone cures 8)
  2. Yep Ryanjury, thats what Im thinking....will get some good lights first, then maybe DIY CO2 and then maybe pressurised. I dont want to crash and burn at the start...
  3. This is really a beginners question, and please direct me to threads if you know of them. I have spent a bit of time using the search function, but had no luck as yet. What do I need to set up CO2 with a bottle? (DH has 3 bottles that he uses for welding and says that I can use one for plants 8) ) I will be running a 180 litre tank and I want to plant it quite heavily. Also where is the best place to get the items I need? I'm assuming a solenoid (to turn off at night time) A pressure regulator (to adjust the flow) A one way valve (so no H2O flow back?) A diffuser/ladder thingee (to disperse the bubbles) and is what is the black CO2 hose for? is it important? Feel free to ROTFL if I'm way on the wrong track....
  4. I do want to run DIY CO2 in my tank....where do I get a 'pollen diffuser' from? since you reccommend them
  5. What is a carpet fitting? I have a wooden floor where its going. There is a double power point right beside where I want to put it 8) but the hose is miles away :-?
  6. OOohhh free gravel, awesome, what colour is it? I'm keen.... 8)
  7. Sorry I know some of these questions have been asked before How deep should substrate be in a tank that is going to be heavy on plants? And I know there is no right answer but is coarse sand better than pebbles? Will the sand from my local landscapers be OK? Its a yellowish coarse sand usually for sand pits... and what are the pros/cons of lighter vs. darker colours for substrate? TIA
  8. So I'm getting my tank and stand in the weekend :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: (Juwel Rio 180) and I want to put in my dining room against a wall between 2 windows, and my question is : do you put a tank and stand right up against the wall or leave a bit of a gap? and if so how much gap? Because I know once its there it will be impossible to move. Thanks.
  9. Thanks for the kind offers and advice. 8) I will take you up on your offer for plants ryanjury. I will PM you when I am heading to Bulls thanks. Jennifer - cheers for the easy to follow recipe for fishless cycling, I will do this in my tank, purely for the novelty of doing it and also because I wont be getting fish straight away anyway...(still dont know what I want  )
  10. So, what price does that make the master kit then? about $55?
  11. OOOhhhh thanks, will try and get myself to Animates then. Do they have an online store? I will have to ring and ask.
  12. I really wanted to have a heavily planted tank, with maybe a school of some type of tetras... I just want 1 or 2 types of fish and maybe 1 type of bottom fish. I'm open for suggestions.... I like neons - would prefer cardinals or those black neony things ember tetras harlequins dunno really  I like clowns loaches for the bottom, or ottos I am on the lookout for plants at the moment and trying to learn about them.
  13. Hi, I am getting a 180 litre tank and want to set up by fishless cycling... :-? I've not done it before so was just wondering what test kits I will need and if there is a brand/type that is better than others? On my list of test kits to get is pH Nitrate and then maybe Nitrite is there any others I need. Also I was going to set up with substrate, plants, filter, heater, light and water.....and then maybe do the dose with ammonia thing? Cloudy ammonia from supermarket? Am I on track? I have read a bit online but it all sort of seems to be squidging around in my head :-?

    Hi, Im new

Hi all, Ive been browsing this site for a couple of days and want to introduce myself. I have had fish in the past as well as worked in 2 Pet/fish shops. Just set up a tank after several years without fish. I won a 25 litre tank on TM, set it up with a wee filter and some cold water guppies and caught the bug. Got another tank from TM, (54 litres) really crappy with a few chips and white crunchy stuff all over the glass, which I scraped off with a razor blade. It was really cheap and came with free gravel, filter, plastic plants and ancient fluro light. I transferred my guppies into warm water and they promptly had babies... I picked up some more guppies in Palmy, which appear to have some Endlers traits? and some plants. But just tonight I have won myself a Juwel Rio 180 :bounce: (TM again 8) ) I want to set up a planted tank, with community fish. So I will be trawling old threads and asking n00b questions....
