I just removed about 20 small snails and there is still more!
-
O really? i found that the new plants that i put in there the other day are having holes put in them i am suspecting it might be the snails, maybe? there are quite a few of them now.
-
I added dwarf chain loaches to my tank
I love the sound of new fish but im not sure if the budget will allow it! lol and hopefully i dont
Snails love cucumber. A good way to catch them is by keeping a small piece of cucumber under an inverted container (so ur plecos and fish dont get to it) overnight. You will find a lot of snails inside the container the next day morning. Happy snail huntingCool i might try that tonight!

thanks guys. this is actually my first OWN tropical aquarium, ive always worked on other peoples, and i have finally done my own i am so proud of it! lol
-
very nice - lots of room for the plants to grow and room for the swimmers at the front.
is that a real log? From here to there I can't tell but if it's real that was a great find
wish they were real, but they are fake, 2 different plastic logs. they both end and meet behind the red plant

so i have finished our tank. still trying to get some Guppies. hope everyone likes it!
-
You should probably get one. It will help
yup thats the plan next week!

I have found some problems with my plants that have appeared over the past couple of days. i have a flax that has developed black spots all over it, and this other read plant that the leaves are dying and going all "see through". i have no light at the moment and i have taken the air pump out of it because i understand that this takes all the CO2 out of the water. any ideas y these problems are there?

great idea. i will start cycling it when i have something to do it in. anyone got a plastic drum or something?
-
so unfortunitly i am not able to get my marine tank running for another few months we have decided when our lease runs out here in about 4 months we are going to move back closer to chch so setting it up now would mean that i have to do it all over again in the near future(and stress the system out??). even though i have everything i need, even the skimmer(and it was free too so no complaints there) but this will give me a chance to do a bit more research and throw more ideas around. We have however set up our tropical tank and wen i get the last few fish to go in it tomorrow i will post some pictures.

I finally got our tropical tank running and put some stock in it today. more to come on wednesday! but i have found some small snails crawling around the tank i have no idea what kind they are, or how they got in there, should they be in there????

since you posted in saltwater im assuming you mean for your saltwater set up if you are just use your tap water as its artesian anyway (assuming your out north canterbury like i think you are) still not ideal but the spring water is still not pure its full of minerals like tap water is not ideal for a reef you can get pure dew purified water from the supermarket about$5 for 10l its pure but its not mineral water. avoid anything that says mineral or spring water for your saltwater tank
yup its to fill my tank. i was going to get the pure drew water if i couldn't find a spring. but with that advice ill get the pure drew.

Hi everyone! yes i know i can buy it from the shop in large quantities but i know there have been some springs springing up around Canterbury during the earthquake. does anyone know of any where i can get 100L for one of our tanks?

i take it she no longer has sea horses
correct!
-
She said she used it for her sea horses when she had them. "red sea max" was a brand that i looked at and also "Marinium Reef Sea Salt" was recommended
-
here is something else i need some advice on - salt.
i went to he local pet shop and asked about it and they told me to use a brand of salt called "red band" from the supermarket its not normal table salt apparently but i thought about proper aquarium salt but there are a few different brands out there, which one is best?
-
yup thats another option. i have decided on a set of LED lights from the website you gave me they only take 9.8W of power! the biggest drinker is the heater which is 100W.
-
i have been looking at generators but they cost fuel lol. but as i found out in a disaster a couple of weeks ago fuel is hard to come by..... and if you store it it does go off over time. :tears:

I have been thinking about setting up a 180w solar panel on our roof to charge a battery bank so it can power our fishtanks that only requires about 120w of power. i am also trying to think of some other alternative so i can curb the monthly power bill!
It would also help a lot if we had a power outage so it could keep running. there is a auto transfer switch i have been looking at too just in case. yes i know it has an initial setup cost but its clean and its green! it could also help power things like cellphones and laptops. im still looking at a few different solar and wind options(because there seems to be quite abit of wind out here.
anyway i would love peoples opinions on yet another one of my project ideas! lol

Ok so i have come a conclusion. i have decided to get this one: http://www.bubble-magus.com/en/productShow.asp?id=968. Even though it wasn't on the list.

there are some good cheap skimmers availible at the moment but there is some crap out there too id avoid buying anything off ebay as its more than likely to useless unless you spend hundreds if you do come across something that looks good on the net or trademe at a price within your budget check with us on here first before buying it
These are the skimmers ive narrowed it down too.

Hello! i have been posting replies and discussions on here for a 2 or 3 weeks now but i thought i should let you all know abit about myself and what you get yourself into when you "meet me" lol
ok so from the beginning. i am Craig, i'm 19, i live in Amberley with my partner, and my 2 month old son. I am a St. John youth volunteer, and have been heavily involved with St. John youth for the past 9 almost 10 years!
I am currently setting up a nano marine tank, and the miss's convinced me yesterday to setup a tropical tank. anyway i have found everyone on here very knowledgeable so far and hope to dive into the knowledge more!
((((PS: dont give me a lecture about being too young to have a son because i love it and i don't regret it. i can throw it back at you if you want to dish it too me.))))

I just stay where I am until it stops...I've reached the point where I cant be bothered moving anymore...

filters - internal Vs external
in Freshwater
Posted
Hi all.
I am currently looking for a new filter for my tropical tank and i currently have a external canister filter which isn't working very well at the moment. i have another filter i am going to use for a bit of flow in the tank which is a Haliea BT-200. i wouldnt use it as a primary filter because it did clog up when we used it in our goldfish tank.
i would like to get another canister filter, something not too expensive. the following i was looking at -
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/F ... 589616.htm
or
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/F ... 559266.htm
i understand the first one is a cheap import by the look of it but as long as i works it would be fine???
