  1. Friends has a high lime content in their water and it caused major problems as it coated jug elements (so they were always having to replace them) and it also coated the aquarium heaters. They used rainwater whenever possible.

Yes same here. we have had to replace our jug once in the 6 months weve been here. i thought that might happen with something in the aquarium.

You can reduce the lime (hardness) with resins such as zeolite but they exchange calcium for sodium. As above---rainwater is cheaper. Unusual to have iron in solution in alkaline water. The ferrous (soluble) state of iron becomes ferric (virtually insoluble) in alkaline conditions.

Might be cheaper and easier to drive to Kaiapoi 20 mins away and get a large tank of water from there. i think that's about the only place in Canterbury where they have not put chlorine in the water. If not ill go for the rain water.

  2. oh sorry, thought the lime was in the tank. if you can see it settling mechanical filtration will likely remove a lot of it so the more filtration the better, stirring it up will help get it into the filter. What filter you running?

it is a eheim canister. cant remember the model, its in the garage. quite a good one im aware of.

  3. carbon should get rid of the brown tinge but that will depend on what it is to some extent more than likely sediment , you would want some decent carbon though not the cheap stuff. as for lime i hope you dont have any fish in there as the ph will be very high

I also believe there is abit of sediment because it settles on every surface including the bath.

  4. Obvious suggestion would be plants like Java fern or Anubias.

To give a better answer we would need to know some more information.

What are the tank dimensions? what type and how much light are we talking about? what sort of substrate are you using? and what are you goals(what look do you want to achieve?)

the idea was suggested to created a planted apisto tank. the dimensions are 850mm x 50mm x 50mm. my plan was just to use normal shingle stones at the bottom. looking at a community style tank. something bright and beautiful. the light i was given with the tank so dont really know much about it but its 600mm long and is a T8??

  5. I reckon a nice planted tank with a few caves and some dift wood. A few apistos, some bristlenoses, a school of tetras and maybe a few other fish. I'd love to do one myself, but i'm kind of restricted to 1 tank at the moment.

They are a great addition to a community tank and a very peaceful, as long as the other fish stay out of their territory.

Loving the idea. not too sure the light would be good enough for a planted tank tho. i think its a 60cm t8. but its in the corner of the picture anyway.

  6. Are you wanting to put these all in the same tank??

    yeap i am.

I am not aware of sharks or clown loaches having ever been bred in NZ. There are, however, a number of plec breeders in the fishroom.
Might need to try the LFS, you're not likely to get 3 of those 4 from any "breeders" locally...

If i cant find them i will go to redwood aquatics :)

  7. what are you after

    What he said ^^

to start the tank off i want to get Neons, sharks, clown loaches and pleco. ive had them all before but had to sell them.

oh and the other half wants guppies :)

  8. I have purchased some tank equipment from overseas. i consider it to be bought second hand because to send it back for warranty would not be worth it. i could be sending something that cost me $60 and it may cost $50 to send it back halfway around the world so it wouldnt be worth the effort or money. I have decided i will stick to the local shops and trademe :)
