  1. Arrrgh, me too. You know how the first song you hear in the morning gets stuck in your head all day?

"If you want me I'll come running, come running, come running to you."

Arrrgggghhhh! Shutup brain, don't make me break out the Venga Bus to get rid of it. Hang on, that'd be worse

  2. I think we've had about 3-4 replacement batteries for this car :an!gry

Do the headlights dim a little when it's idling? It could be the alternator (a little generator basically - it charges the battery and supplies current to the car) needs looking at. If it isn't putting out enough current, it shortens battery life a lot. Auto electricians are notoriously expensive though, sorry

  3. 100 kph is pretty slow for a high end glider, especially once you get into slope soaring. World record is in the region of 500+ KPH.

Here we go, this guy claims 750 KPH. Fast enough you can't see much on the camera beyond the occasional flicker.

Yeah, I was being conservative as I've never measured. 100 isn't bad for frontside. Dynamic soaring on the back side is where the speed is. That video is real. Quite a few guys have gone over 400mph now.

This is the howl I was talking about

Caryl, I don't think people make any noise after they get hit at 100, they don't move much either... :o

  4. There was a long time ago (I think, I can't remember back that far) but no worries

A while back there was some conflict over the direction in which this forum was heading, and some of the members felt strongly enough about it to start a new forum that was more inline with the way we felt it should be run. Since then there have been many compromises and consessions made, and FNZAS is a much better place because of it. Its all history now, and FNZAS will no doubt continue to evolve to suit the needs of its members.

OK, thanks guys. I wasn't trying to stir up the mulm or anything, just curious as it seemed odd that little ol' NZ could support two forums for fish keeping...

    :)

  5. thank you.. will do.. :hail:

No worries. If you are in Hamilton one weekend and it's not too windy, check out the club field on Collins road. The guys like showing off stuff and answering questions.

I mostly fly slope (gliders flying in the lift that rushes up steep hills and cliffs) these days. If you are ever out at Raglan and it's a SW - NW wind, check out the slope by the top right carpark (turn r at the roundabout at the top of Wainui reserve) and there's usually a few guys flying. There's nothing like the sound of a 3 meter composite glider as it howls past at 100 kph :)

  6. Depends on the pilot, I've seen people get it first go, and some of my mates are still rubbish pilots after a few years. Most people start buying more planes as soon as they have mastered a trainer. I learned to fly on a Multiplex Easystar which I still fly sometimes - it's a good first plane to grow into. Hobby King do a cheaper knock-off here You can buy a plane with power system, batteries (get a few, Lipo batts are pretty cheap now) and a cheap radio all from HK. Having said that, buy the best radio you can afford up front. Otherwise you'll just end up upgrading a year or two down the track when you want smoother control and need more channels and some of the specialist control mixes.

If you get a simulator it helps with learning orientation. Like when the plane is coming towards you and right and left reverse.

Check out RCGroups.com or http://www.parkflyers.org.nz if you want to ask questions in an RC forum :)

  7. What's your kh? If your kh is high enough, it'll help prevent ph swings. My Kh is 3 and seems stable pH wise

Basically, once you know your kh, you adjust the CO2 flow to get the right drop in pH. The drop in pH tells you how much CO2 is being dissolved into the water.

Have a look at this chart.

If your kh was 3.0 and your pH was 7 you'd have CO2 dissolved at 8.7 ppm. For a well lit planted tank you want to aim for 30 ppm, so you'd have to increase the CO2 flow until your pH dropped to 6.4 which would give you 35 ppm

Since you're going DIY, I don't think you can use a needle valve to adjust the CO2 flow, so you'll have to mess about with bottle sizing to get the right CO2 flow.

  8. it takes a lot to kill a dog, dark cooking chocolate was the strongest and it'd take about 500g to kill a Jack Russell. I only know this because I don't like my neighbours dog... :digH:

    There's a good chart here

600 grams of baking choc will do in a golden retriever! Nasty way to die, BTW...

  9. They do have power adaptors, Ira, at least the 2078 does.

Customs usually ping you if an imported item's worth > $400-$500 I find. Although I bought in a $4000 telescope a few years ago and only had to pay $73???

Moot now - the LFS has made me a reasonable offer :D Don't forget to haggle - the asking price is just a starting point...

  10. I've been considering this as well. I can get an Eheim 3E 2078 for $910, including shipping, GST and 8 litres of media.

Compare that with $960 to $1100 in NZ, and another $350 for media. Still waiting to hear if the LFS will talk turkey.

I still haven't found out if the Eheim power adaptors are 110/240 or not.
