Stuff that looks like Black Wool appearing on plants
LoveArowanas posted a topic in Beginners Corner
Hey all I could post a pic but title describes it perfectly really. What is this stuff? Should I be worried? Is a clean out going to be ok? cheers -
Yup that exactly whats going on at mine too, guppies are curious and so is cat but she doesn't like putting her paw in. She refuses to drink out of her fresh watered bowl. I think its got something to do with the running water.......
-
cool thanks, its been going on a few months so I suspected was ok. Just wanted to make sure The fish seem more interested in the cat than the other way around, falling in wont happen not enough gap, filter is sturdy enough, tanks not really up high so she just hops over from the TV cabinet :fshi:
-
Hey Not too concerned for the fish (handful of guppies), more the cat. I have a small 60L with one of those fountain type water filters and I assume because of the running water I cant keep the cat away from it. It has a piece of glass for a lid with a small opening. If I try and block that opening the cat does whatever to unblock and yowls like its the end of the world if she cant. Soooo my question is, is this likely to be bad for cat or fish?

I notice when I feed my tropical some flakes are attempted and rejected Some flakes are rejected by many fish.... then eaten by a random other Rejected flakes sit on the bottom, but are gone later. I have upside down catfish and Kuhli Loaches so perhaps they are cleaned up by them? Or are they no good and just break down? Whats going on here? Some flakes are more nutritious than others? Poor quality flakes? :-? Can I make my own?

Help with Pregnant Black Neon Tetra
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in Beginners Corner
" Black neon tetras do not get pregnant" lol@ me :bggrn: Should google more tx -
Hey all My tetras had been pregnant in the past, but not wanting to get another tank I took the "free fish food" attitude to the situation. However...I now have a girlfriend (braaaaaag), and she informed me this is not very becoming. Im mad for this girl so I do as Im told, so its extra tank and fry rearing time for me This is where you clued up folk come in. I have no idea what Im doing here. I have her in a small tank (the fish I mean) ....and shes seems happy enough, but is the subscrate the right sort for her to lay her eggs in? Does everything look ok? The fish seems to hang about the filter part of the tank a lot, is this normal? She came out of a well maintained 180L Any suggestions to facilitating a happy birth thus polishing my parental acumen would be greatly appreciated

Want to drill holes in my Tank. Do_not_want a disaster
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in DIY Section
Yep I guess I can do that too, but I really want to maximise her entertainment, hence the full walk around concept Shes a Mandalay ....... -
hey all A few years ago I got a JEWEL 180L, and the filter system has this array of multiple square block sponges that fit in it (about 5-6 of them) The JEWEL instruction manual warned me I better replace those sponges every 6 months! But I thought that sounded suspiciously like someone trying to pick my pocket so I ignored it So ya.....a few years later my tank seems in good health. I rarely lose fish. I don't bother to test the water cos I feel that's another fairly pointless expensive purchase (spent $130 on my kit, used it once) So umm yeah, I guess my question is .....am I doing anything wrong? Do those filter sponge things actually need changing.... ever? The slim white ones that went on the top....well I bought refills for a while then just stopped after seeing someone one here scoffing at them. :dunno:

Hey all BRAG: IM GETTING A KITTY YAAAAAAAAAY BEAT: Its an expensive kitty, shes not here yet but I  her already, and I live on a busy road. So Im keeping her indoors except for guided walks, but as shes a smart active cat I want her to enjoy my tank as much as possible. So I came up the idea of building a ramp type structure around the whole tank and she can wander pursue and gawk as she pleases ANOTHER BEAT: Im no handyman, so Im unsure how to go about this. Sure I can purchase the wood and cut it into lengths easy enough. But how to attach the ramps to the tank? With screws/latches? Sure? Even I could do that? But then I started to fret. What if my drilling of holes upsets the structure holding all that water in place? I could email JEWEL. But Im pretty sure Id get some stuffy reply about never messing with their steez. :sage: Heres a pic of me pointing to the spot where I figured Id drill a few holes to attach my latchs/hinges to attach the wood/ramp Uploaded with ImageShack.us Yous handy peeps think this will be ok? Anyone got a better idea how to go about this (that a dweeb could pull off) tx a lot!

Ok I might check that out, tx for th tips! Im a real tank-fusser so cleaning it every fews days wont bother me at all I put the shark in there.... but tbh I am a little dissapointed, it doesnt look as "real" as I hoped. If someone could just GE a mini Great White that would be swell! :ton:

Just in regards to ornaments etc. I have this rubber-plastic squeaky toy for baths shark thingy that I want to put in my tank but Im obviously wary Few questions if I may What sort of guidelines are there for foriegn objects? How to know what is ok and what is not. How would I test/know if my shark is ok? What are the standard fish shop ornaments made out of? Do the ornament makers use some sort of special ok-for-tanks paint? Who manufactures them. Are they made in NZ? Is it feasible to make your own? Thanks to anyone who has any clues about these things

Going overseas for 6 weeks...how to handle tank upkeep?
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in DIY Section
ha ha thanks I forgot to add # Slowly reduce feeding frequency to every 2 days/then every 3 days so once a week isnt a shock to them -
Going overseas for 6 weeks...how to handle tank upkeep?
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in DIY Section
Thanks for the replies! I think I have a plan forumalated # I will leave my plants in and obtain a lights timer set for 8 hours per day # I will ask my parents to come in once a week. Every week to feed the fish one small pinch of flakes and drop in one frozen bloodworm square # Every 2nd time they visit (twice overall) ..... I will ask they remove and replace one (large) bucket of water # No scrubbing or subscrate cleaning needed # A list covering all this taped to the wall beside the tank Looks pretty simple and non-labour intensive! Seem ok? -
Going overseas for 6 weeks...how to handle tank upkeep?
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in DIY Section
ahhh thats interesting. It is planted... but Im happy to throw the plants away if it helps As for the lights...Im suprised! I thought fish needed lights for some reason. The tank is reasonably close to a window (no direct sunlight of course) ...so I could leave the lights off for 6 weeks and leave the curtains open and that would be fine? GZ...yep I know what you mean, but Im pretty sure there is enough bacteria etc built up in the filter so it should survive manic subscrate clean outs? Any tips on auto feeders anyone? -
The lowdown is...Im going overseas for 6 weeks in November. I have informed my parents (who know nothing about fishkeeping) ....that they are in charge of making sure my fish dont die. I do NOT live with my parents (lol) so they have to come over. I dont have flatmates. Im HOPING I can inform my parents they only need to come over 2 or 3 times in that 6 week period, scrub down/clean the inside of the tank at least once, and just do the 40% water changes the other two times I own a JUWEL 180L, inhabitants are 2 Madagascar Rainbows, 2 Kribensis, 6/7 Kulhi Loaches, one Rainbow Shark, 5 emerald eyed rasboros, 5 black neons and 4 glowlight tetras. SO....I will obtain an automatic feeder and time controlled lighting (both currently done manualy) I assume auto feeders will be ok/operate effectively ? Reccomendations? I really want to keep it as simple and non time consuming for the parents as possible. I will obviously clean out the tank obsessively the day I fly out, and fuss over it the moment I get back. I plane to change the subscrate to my smallest size (and not have much of it) to make cleaning the bottom easier for them What does my plan sound like? Any advice and tips appreciated Obviously Ive never done this before. Oh...they normally get cleaned out and water changed once a week

Are fishkeepers the nerds of the pet owning world?

Good reply, thanks Rob. helps me deal with my friends weird remarks better -

Are fishkeepers the nerds of the pet owning world?
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
I never said it would happen "the majority" so agree with that, but the simple fact you agree its "more likely" underlines my point. It appears you are then contridicting tyour own statement by saying that all Stereotypes are just wild guesses and completely incorrect? People will make stereotypes based on their observations. Sure...*some* may be incorrect but its much more likely that they will be right Stereotypes is just unscientific statisical analysis. Often statistical analysis is impossible to gather or too expensive to conduct, so marketers will then fall back to stereotypes since many of them are just common sense disclaimer: I dont work in marketing -

Totally agree, thats what i love about fishkeeping the most. Its far better for unwinding after the workign day than the further stimulus of television, and if yuo are that way inclined its a great way to achieve the state of no-mind -
Are fishkeepers the nerds of the pet owning world?
LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
Thats exactly why it is correct jack. A stereotype doesnt have to nail EVERY SINGLE example, it just has to be correct a reasonably high amount of the time to be useful. I suggest you never get a job in marketing if you cant grasp this. I like what spoon said, I think he/she is saying that to be successful as a fishkeeper you ideally need to have some personality traits. Therfore....a certain type of person is attracted to it. (and stick at it) But heres the thing...I dont think non-fishkeepers would know or understand this easily. I never realised how much went into it until I bought my 1st tank. I just wanted pretty fish in my home office to break up the grind of staring at my moniters. So how do our random friends come to the conclusion that fish keeping is somehow nerdy? -

LoveArowanas replied to LoveArowanas's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
No. Where did I say or even imply that? I dont think you know what a sterotype is, or at least...you take its application as an absolute statement, which is not what stereotypes are intended as. If you take a sample of 10,000 fishkeepers and 10,000 non-fishkeepers and you discover than the fish keepers are 10 times more like to own a pair of purple pants then you can absolutely correctly create the stereotype of "a fishkeeper wearing purple pants". Because statistically speaking, if you met a fish keeper they are 10 times more likely to have purple pants. Whats rubbish about that? Its just math and its extremely useful in many ways Sounds like you want to say that "you know a fishkeeper who doesnt wear purple pants" and therefore declare the stereotype rubbish based of your sample size of (1) :dunno:
