  1. Ah okay, thanks I was confused on that point. That would be difficult with fish that spawn at 3am
  2. Just a question about obtaining breeding certificates, I see in the regulations that another financial FNZAS member needs to witness the spawning. Does this mean witness as in actually be there when spawning takes place, or is it more a nebulous sort of thing as in someone goes "oh yes, that probably happened"?
  3. Hm, they've calmed down now. I suppose it's possible they just got spooked, though my JD keeps wedging itself under rocks and playing dead.
  4. I moved things in my cichlid tank about yesterday and added a bunch of limestone. Today I did a water change of around 40% (I took a bunch of plastic plants out last night and there must have been a lot of nitrifying bacteria on them because the water parameters which had been okay, went screwy today, and when I say went screwy, I mean they were a tad over 0 in both Ammonia and Nitrites.) Now, about an hour after the water change, the cichlids have horrified looks on their faces (if that's possible) and are swimming in short, stop start jerky motions and fanning the fins next to their gills alot. The RTS I have in there seems unaffected. What should I do? And what is the problem? Could it be some kind of pH shock? I tested the pH and its pretty much stable, so I don't see how it could be that. I did add dechlorinator to the water as well.
  5. I was wondering about that. The tank is a bit bare right now because I took out all but two log things. I had a few grass matt plastic plant things in there, but they were catching a lot of debris and making the water quality hard to maintain. I think I'll try and get some rocks or wood for him to swim around.
  6. Lol, but it is so loopy and acrobatic. He gets completely sideways on the underpass.. it's pretty funny to watch
  7. I've noticed that both my young Jack Dempsey and one of my betta males (in different tanks) both like to sometimes swim in loops. The JD just does big loops around the glass, going up, over and round to the bottom where he almost flips completely over, and the betta does the same sort of thing around the suction cup for the heater sometimes. They show no signs of illness and the water is fine, so I don't think it is sickness. Is this a type of happy fish play?
  8. My fingers are crossed I'll keep this updated until the ich is conquered anyhow.
  9. I don't have a picture of her with the white spot, and right now the tank is dark blue and she is hiding, so no picture there, but this is what she looked like beforehand... it seems to have developed quite quickly, within a week.
  10. Hi everyone, Just thought I would make a post here about the white spot on my new Synodontis, I haven't dealt with it before and I am hoping things go well. She seems in good health, she just has quite a few patches of white furry whatnots on her that I am pretty sure shouldn't be there. Starting today, I dosed the tank with Wunder Tonic, I chose that over the straight up whitespot because it has both methylene blue and malachite green in it, both good for white spot and it also has some quinine and acraflavine. I dosed at half the rate, because being a synodontis catfish, she doesn't have scales. There is a young Jack Dempsey in the tank with her, he is utterly unaffected, only she has these spots, which I guess means she is stressed. I've raised the temperature to 27 (I had been keeping it lower because I read that Dempsey's do better with temps at the lower end of the tropical scale.) I also added aquarium salt as per dosing directions. I'll update things here. It is hard to tell how she is doing sometimes because of the whole nocutrnal / hiding away a lot thing.
  11. Please NO lettuce. Lettuce can, and will kill rabbits quickly, especially babies. Read this: http://hubpages.com/hub/Bad-Rabbt-Food- ... Your-Bunny
  12. Oops, I just realized that there is a trade section on the forums, so listed this there.
  13. I picked up 5 bettas in the hope of starting a female sorority, but I've been left with three out of five being most definite males. The other two females are quite aggressive towards each other because there aren't enough of them to break up the aggression a bit. Keeping 5 fish all separate is a bit of a mission, so if anyone is interested, I'm happy to give one or more away to good homes. There's a nice little turquoise male, a blue / red male who 'came out' first and is quite the manly man about town, a darker red/ blue that is quite nice as well, and two females, a small one with similar coloring to the light blue / red male, (she's really just a little girl version of him, very cool,) and a larger female with pretty turquoise coloring. At the moment she is suffering from some nipped fins caused the day that the turquoise male decided he was a boy, all the others are in great nick. I don't want to get rid of all of them, but if anyone really wants a certain type of betta that I happen to have, just pm me and let me know. (I'm quite fond of the turquoise boy, so I'll probably keep hold of him unless he's really wanted by someone. If you're interested in breeding, the turquoise female might be a good choice.) If you're looking to breed, both females are ready to go and displaying breeding stripes, and the bigger deep blue and light blue boys are both doing the occasional bubble nest too.

    Hello!

I'm new to the forum and I suppose fish keeping as well. I currently have two tanks, a 20 gallon and a 5 gallon, and will be setting up a 70 gallon this weekend. I've a juvenile Jack Dempsey and 6 fighters. The idea was to have one male and five females in a separate tank, but they were young and stealthy, so it has turned out to be 4 males and 2 females joy!
