I wouldn't say I breed them as such but I did discover a heap of them in my worm farm. Didn't know what they were till I read the above link so might be the next meal for my frogs

I've got random little "worms" that swim around in my bell frog tank but don't seem to affect the frogs or my lonely minnow living in there. Never seen anything in my whistling tank. How much does this aviverm cost?

Very interesting read. I'm leaning towards parasite damage after reading this. The frogs with 1 eye are making an effort to feed but are definitely finding it difficult. I think I may have to euthanise the no eyes as they are going to starve otherwise (any suggestions how to do it nicely?) I'd like to know if these parasites are still in the tank or will they die without another host to go to? And would all the frogs have it even if though they don't all show signs of it? Hey everyone, I have some whistling frogs that were wild caught as tadpoles approx 25 of them. The tadpoles all seemed normal and healthy but as they have morphed into frogs I have noticed that I've got a few with no eyes and a couple with 1 eye only. I was wondering what would cause these deformities. I looked high and low for these frogs/tadpoles in a place that used to abundant with them and now there's very few of them in the wild. It upsets me a bit that my children can't experience the joys of what I did when I was younger (looking for tadpoles in the wild). I'm a lover of frogs and think they need to be looked after regardless of wether they are native or not. These species need to be preserved.

Haha boo! That's such a good name for a frog lol. Awesome video. Tempts me even more . Not going to make a big deal about lowering temp etc. maybe just sprinkle some rainwater closer to spring and see what happens. It's been a big effort to keep them nice and healthy so far so I guess I'll still be happy even if they don't breed.

Currently have 8 frogs in the tank. 4x nearly 3year olds and 4 from the season just gone. The younger ones have been in the tank for 3 days now and so far haven't managed to get themselves eaten! Yay. Tank measures 1.5m length x 50cm width x 80cm height. Lots of places to hide among the driftwood, rocks and baby house plants. Water is contained in a litter tray (brand new and unused by cats currently in the process of having a custom built glass tank/water container) have turned all lights off in the tank. When should I start feeding them again? And how will the young ones cope without food? I live in Nelson if that helps sorry for all the questions. As much research as I do on these guys it's still trial and error for me. Although I'm kinda proud that I haven't killed my big frogs yet

How do I go about brumating them? Should I keep their lights turned off over this period? Should I still give them something to munch on every now and then? How long should I expect it to last? Lots of questions hehe Tia

Never been able to get any of my frogs to eat anything dead.... It is a mouse.....it is the circle of life. Everyone needs to eat and in the wild mice are eaten by frogs. I don't hear the staff at the SPCA complaining about how their roast chicken was killed or wondering what the cow looked like before she was turned into sausages.... We frequently hear stories from upset people because the SPCA won't take a dog because it is to much like a pig dog. Or an elderly person dies and the SPCA is not taking on cats at the moment... As much as I love the work the SPCA does I am often also disappointed by them..... Anyway have gone off topic a little bit. I'll keep it a secret If I decide to feed pinkies so I don't upset anyone. After all I've always got the worm farm I can feed out of ( really hope that isn't frowned on by anybody )

Thanks for the advice I will most defiantly wait until spring and let them do it naturally! Have just transferred them into a much bigger tank with some younger ones I have. Hopefully they don't eat those young'uns. I have heard that they quiet often eat mice in the wild... It's been on my mind for a while now to maybe breed some mice and feed them the young..... Not sure how this comment will go down but I thought I'd see if anyone else has tried this as a source of food?

So I've done a bit of research into breeding these guys but since there is not a lot of info in regards to captive breeding I would like other people's in put into this. It's very nearly winter and I'm sure my 2.5 year old frogs should be mature by now. I would like to know how others have gone about breeding them? E.g any special diet, changes in temp over winter into spring, around what time of year should it happen, any special preparations I should know about Tia

4 frogs. green & golden bell. very quiet. dont seem to want to eat and dont move around alot. dont seem to be losing any weight either. they are inside but in a rather chilly room, possibly 8-10degrees during the day. im sure this is them in hibernation but would like to confirm. any special care? should i disturb them to clean tank out or just leave em to it? just wondering how much food is too much for my frogs. so far this is my first successful attempt at keeping frogs. started with 4 golden bell taddies and now have 4 golden bell frogs. they morphed about 3 weeks before xmas. at the moment they are happy to eat slaters, fruit fly sort of things, worms, and mozzies (mozzies are larvae in the tank and get eaten once they hatch). im currently feeding 5 fruit fly things each plus approx 2 slaters/worms each a day and mozzies once hatched. i dont want to overfeed them and i dont want to starve them. also is there anything they cant eat?? any help appreciated. also any tips on making a home made fly trap would be helpful too.

female reds are hard to come by from what i gather. and yup ive got a beautiful pair of blues.

hey everybody, ive had my blues in a tank of their own for the past 3 months and nothing has happened. finally last night i noticed a very nice looking bubble nest in the tank. since this is my first time breeding gourami's i have no idea how to tell if theres eggs in the nest and if i should take the fish out yet or not. any advice will be much appreciated. t/a in advance...

we do have the little jumpy things but after working out they dont harm the fish we had to find out what exactly it was that was killing the fish.

thanks for that Aquila. that looks like the exact thing that is attacking my fish. im guessing they came in on some cobalt blue gouramis as they were they frirst fish to die and we hadnt had them for very long. also i have seen others have had issues with the cobalt blues. what would you recommend treating with?? i dont have alot of time to sit there and pick them off with tweezers due to having a young child.

um in the tank that has these little critters there is danios, tetras, angels, a couple of gouramis, swordtails, platies, bn, horsefaced loaches, khulie loaches, corys, 2 kribs and 1 lonely female eletric yellow. the only fish we have had temper problems with are the angels as we have a breeding pair and they can get a little nasty when laying but i seriously dont think they are the ones to cause these wounds on the fish that keep dying.

Collembola or springtails is the closest thing that i have found to these little critter.

i havnt been able to find any info on what this is. they are a very small white thing and they are living on the top of the water. they jump around alot. almost like a flea. the top region fish are most affected by them. im guessing that they latch onto the fish and slowly burrow under the scales and the fish end up with raw holes all over thier bodies. and then the fish dies

just wondering if there was anyone in nelson that has a bit of knowledge in fish diseases and parasites? we have had for awhile some sort of parasite in one of our tanks that seems to be killing off all our fish. it is visible to the naked eye but not big enough to take a photo of. would much appreciate if someone was able to maybe come and view and help us with our investigations. i dont know if i want to rehome him he is such a pretty fish. but i dont want to be cruel and let him live his life in 50litres of water. would he do better if it was a 100litre tank? i have a spare sitting in storage somewhere

will do dimensions tommorow as the tanks in my girls room. we dont see the peacock cos he hides in a log all the time. hes has more than tripled his size since we got him easter last year. thought someone to give him company would maybe bring him out a bit more but dont really want another peacock cos yes i know they do fight. what about a couple of dwarf cichlids? something that doesnt get huge and wont fight with him. not too concerned about the serpae tertas. they got put in with him because they were fin nipping the guppies and angels etc in the big tank so they can give as good as they get lol. would love to get a 500litre tank and put cichlids in it but money doesnt grow on trees unfortunatly.

i have in a 50ltr tank 1 unknown peacock about 10cm. i want something to put with him but i dont have alot of experience with cichlids. i also have a couple of serpae tetras that are doing fine with him and a bumblebee catfish. i want to get a bristlenose to put in there and maybe 2 smaller cichlids or 1 bigger to keep him company without overloading the tank. can anyone give me any ideas?? tia

hi im a 20 yr old single mum looking for a rural/semi rural home in nelson somewhere to rent. maybe a farmhouse or something similar. must have atleast 2 bedrooms and cost no more than $250-$300 a week. would like a office to study in but if not thats fine. fully fenced secure section a must. i have pets and will pay bond. i have references that can be contacted. im looking to move in the next 6 weeks. anything will be considered. can anyone help me please?
