  1. I'm sorry I can't give further advise to whats been given other than GOOD LUCK!! I hope you work it out a your flappy friends start eating. I dream of a mudskipper tank but they are so uncommon in NZ...one day maybe... a vid for inspiration
  2. Hey LivingArt! Same family but my searching got me to this http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2003/9/inverts and got me interested (P.S. The Fig8 puff I got of you is happy healthy and fat! and has a buddy to keep him company too now)
  3. Hi, How easy is it / where can we get Nerite Snails from in NZ? My brief research on them this far suggests that they are brackish tolerable? Thanks for your replies
  4. its coral rock. My partner has a marine setup so stole a bit from that
  5. http://www.flickr.com/photos/54181265@N ... 891684505/ currently at war with string algae...
  6. I know this thread is pretty old now but thought I'd update things. The tank I set up was fairly successful. The windelov and java fern are now in my brackish tank and are doing ok. Nothing spectacular but they are still alive. The ambulia went brown and mushy, its since been turfed. I even ended up with brackish tolerable snails, but as soon as they went into the main brack tank, the puffers ate em! :o
  7. not worried about the community anymore, will donate the tetras to someone. GBA's will be alright with them? just want something a bit different
  8. or... viewtopic.php?f=11&t=47699&p=526603#p526603 I do like my puffers...
  9. world of water (hamilton) have an elephant nose... thoughts?
  10. that was how I had it and yeah it looked really cool with a big school of rummy's, still got a few. yeah rocking on the cichlid fence at the moment...
  11. They are pretty nice looking, will do a bit of reading on them... Whats their compatibility status..?
  12. Thanks for the compliments guys - its taken a while to get here but am very proud of how it looks now. Looks awesome at night with all the plants releasing oxygen bubbles.
  13. Trying to decide "where to next" with this tank... http://www.flickr.com/photos/54181265@N05/5016379247/ Its had a variety of incarnations in its time, the latest being a home for a community of tetras (rummy's, phantoms,) and 2 GBA. Wanting to explore something more exotic, but something that wont destroy my plants. Suggestions please Currently contemplating rams but....want something different... Was thinking about severums or parrots but tank is only 160L and apparently severum are fairly destructive?
  14. Interested in hearing peoples experiences with regard to converting plants to become brackish tolerable. I've set up a trial tank with (currently) java fern, windelov, and ambulia and intend to slowly raise the salinity via the regular water changes. My goal is to have established brackish tolerable plants to move into my puffer/fig8 tank sitting at SG of 1.010. (Also intend to add to the list of plants e.g. crypts, valisneria, etc..) Various websites list brackish capable plants but none I've found to date discuss the specifics around conversion from FW to BW nor do many of them talk about SG levels. Additionally, assuming plants survive at BW levels, is the upkeep/maintenance of them the same as FW? Do you use the same nutrients? CO2? Iron? I'm far from being a chemist, but would assume the salinity would cause a complete different chemical "structure" than that of FW....? Thanks for your thoughts/comments.
  15. An informative thread I came across regarding brackish plants - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=143235
  16. The saltiness aside - the tank looks great!! Good luck with the plants :-?
  17. I have 7x BBGs and 2x Fig8 puffers living in brackish setup with SG of 1.008. And I move it up/down approx 0.002 with every water change to simulate natural estuary environment Everyone is very happy (and FAT)
  18. I know this is an old thread but thought it just as good to add to it rather than start a new thread....I'm green when it comes to breeding and with BW tanks but want to share my latest occurrence with others... I have a 60L tank with 7 BBGs in it. It was sitting at 1.005 SG and yesterday I did approx 10% water change (a bucket) with water at around 5deg cooler and with SG of 1.020. Shock horror some may say WHY!!??!!...but I did...with a resulting tank SG of 1.009... and overnight 2 of my BBGs have put on their mating clothes and dancing around the tank.... Coincidental? I hear people mention adding fresh water to stimulate them into breeding....?? Not intending on breeding them but would be cool if the fry survive in the tank but suspect they will end up food for the fig8 puffer / adult BBGs..... Further tank info.....substrate is coral sand and decorated with plenty of "live coral rock" to provide lots of hidey holes...
  19. well I've slept on it and am still as keen as ever to do this. Even read some more stuff this morning talking about compatibility which makes me feel a bit better! Come on muddies come to me.....!!
  20. well if I can find even just one mudskipper I'll convert my brackish tank to an aqua-terra-viva-palada-RIUM and break new territory by successfully housing fig8's skippers and bbg's in the same world...... or not..... any idea's where I can get one from? I've posted a WTB in trade n exchange FYI this has come about, other than from discovering those youtube vids, because I'm unhappy with the recent changes I've made to my brackish tank (went bigger with different substrate and lighting) but am disappointed with the results. Time to uproot and try something different. Thats what is great about this hobby, the rule book is so customisable
  21. Assume your talking about the mudskippers. Yeah seems they are a little picky when it comes to feeding. I guess thats why most people that have shared their experiences on the web talk mainly about live food such as crickets, flying ants, etc for them. I'm still willing to give a go. Mudskippers don't need mud as such? it seems they're happy on wet rock? Currently brainstorming ideas around layers of rock e.g. slate to create the "terra" A slight digression, but was very impressed by this -- http://home.comcast.net/~epollak/Viv200 ... uction.htm
  22. currently reading about.... aquaterrariums.... vivariums.... viquarium... and now paladariums.... annoying / painful in what way - please elaborate....
  23. Im inspired!! If I can get hold of a mudskipper or two I'll be adapting my current brackish tank to house them with my fig 8 and bbg's Anyone have comments / experiences to share?
  24. If only I had another tank..... I might rearrange the rocks etc to disturb the bbg's territories and maybe introduce something new.
