  1. Just thought I'd update .. The other two Gouramis are fine in a 7 litre isolation tank, swimming around nice and happy and eating well. PH test on the isolation tank reads 7.3 (slightly darker than a 7.2) so who knows what killed the other two :-? Sparkling Gouramis are supposed to be hardy fish too. I've still gotta ring Organism and see what they say. But! I am glad the other two have survived they love hanging out together too, never leave each others side - awww.
  2. Ok, will ring them tomorrow and ask for a PH reading. Thanks
  3. Sex: Female Name: Jo Age: 21 Status: Taken by Romeo I'm glad to see so many females in here because my other two hobbies are highly dominated by males. I ride a motorbike and study/work in IT, namely networking and support. Surrounded by men day and night
  4. I'm so gutted because it's never happened to me before. I mean, if their tanks are sitting at 7 then a change to 7.4 wouldn't be too drastic would it? The other two fish are *fingers cross* surviving for now and I bought two CAE's the same day (and went into the same tank) and they're fine. Boo hiss, I don't like losing fish. (that wasn't meant to rhyme, it just did )
  5. I would have no idea what their water conditions were like. But it's quite a reputable store so I would assume everything would be balanced and normal. I'm going to give them a ring on Tuesday to see what the story is because it was so random for them to just .. die. I've moved the other two into an isolation tank with half water from the guppy tank and half clean water with some plants. I hope they live because I've wanted these fish for so long
  6. I bought 4 Sparkling Gouramis from Organism yesterday. Brought them home and put them in my established tank that has three guppies in. Came home today to find one of the Gouramis dead. Tested the water and Ammonia is at 0, PH is 7.4 and Nitrate is at 10 but read that it is fine up to 40. And did the last water change yesterday. Now one of the other Gouramis is dying. It's flicking about every so often but doesn't seem to be breathing? And it's floating vertically with it's nose up. I've moved it into another tank and it's in a breeding box by itself. What on earth is happening with my fish I don't want the other two to die.
  7. Google it first? "H.R. 669: 111th Congress Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act To prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species' or human health, and for other purposes." This is kind of what New Zealand has already, no?

I'm a +1 for the Female Fish Enthusiast count  (actually i think theres quite a few females on here) and I guess I'm lucky enough to have a partner whos even more enthusiastic than me! p.s, that would be Romeo! Hence Joliet .. yeah
  9. 4 female fighters, a dwarf gourami, 4 platys and a small female bristlenose. Noone ever really nips, except the female fighters - they nip each other sometimes. It's like they've just appeared though, I'm used to seeing the females tails being nipped and watching them heal and this doesn't look anything like that :-?
  10. I noticed my male has been getting lighter in the fin area :-? He has a big split at the top of his tail fin along with some lighter 'transparencies' towards the back of his tail fin and the top of his bottom fin is almost see through. Does it look like the beginning of fin rot? If it is, should I seperate him and treat him or treat the whole tank?
  11. It's not a quick flick, it's a full on swim against, for a second or so. I'll have a check for external parasites tonight
  12. Hmm, doesn't look like he has any worms on him (it says it looks like whitespot) so maybe it's just an itch.
  13. Does he have internal parasites? I remember reading somewhere that the rubbing meant they had parasites. Nothing wrong with him on the outside, eating well and not hassling other fish. Only just noticed the behaviour tonight as well. Water parameters are fine.
  14. I just crush up my normal tropical fish food with the flat edge of something like a knife. Then I wet the end of my finger with the tank water, pick up the crushed dust and dip my finger back into the tank and the food should come away with a bit of waggling. I feed mine in the morning when I get up, in the afternoon when I come home and just before I go to bed - they seem to be growing quickly! Don't forget to do water changes and keep an eye out for dead fry and get rid of them as soon as you can
  15. What do you do with 276 barbs come winter?! Can you sell them to pet shops? I'd love to try this but our section consists of a washing line, a rectangle patch of grass and some grass we share with a neighbour  besides, I don't think our landlord would be very impressed!
  16. Ah. Point taken haha, they seem to be fine though thankfully! Ok, will do is there anything else I should replace it with? In there at the moment is a black coarse sponge pad and some bio noodles (ceramic looking things?) in there.
  17. Update! Today is day 4 since spotting and treating the whitespot. I also added salt two days ago (1/2 tsp per litre) to help them build up a slime coat. Yesterday I did my 25% water change + added more white spot cure + replaced the salt I took out. They're looking great! The one female who was totally riddled with it looks almost naked  she hardly has any now, maybe one or two spots? And none of the other fish seem to have got it. So maybe I'll do another treatment in 3 days time (well, two after this one) and then hopefully it should all be gone. Just updating so if anyone comes across this post in the future then they know the white spot cure + salt worked
  18. Lucky you! I only managed to save one! The rest got eaten I think
  19. Where is the egg spot on a female? I never knew to look for one! There's a bunch of females at Critter Kingdom but looking at some of them I'm sure at least two are really males and I'd love to be able to actually spot something on a female that could tell me for sure
  20. My male dwarf Gourami is chasing the Platys away from one corner of the tank he seems to like making his bubble nest in (and it only seems to be the platys he picks on, and goes to nip them too) and he really goes after the female Dwarf Gourami I bought at the same time as him - really chasing her around and scaring her into the plants. And now all she does is hide there and hardly comes out for food - I have to target feed her which is hard with the other ravenous fish in my tank. Is this normal behaviour for a male? I was told there were quite peaceful fish so I'm a bit worried. Either way, he's really stressing out the other fish and I don't feel comfortable keeping him. So was just wondering if theres anything I can do to keep him happy? Thanks in advance
  21. Nah the thing I've taken out is like a package, it has white sponge on the top and black carbon underneath. The coarse black sponge is still in there
  22. Thanks for the advice so if it says I shouldn't do more than 3 consecutive doses (9 days worth) should I ignore that or stick to it? There are quite a few spots on their tails, more on one of the fish than the other but they seem to be the only two with the spots. None of their gills, just the back tail and the front side fins.
  23. Oh yup, done this too, sorry should've mentioned that Actually, what can I do with the carbon pad (its a sponge ontop of a bag of carbon)? Will it still be ok in a few days time? Will it be full of dead bacteria etc? Or should I just buy a new one? :-? I've tried to read up as much as I can about it but just need to be certain that I'm doing everything right. Cheers
  24. Sadly my guppies have got whitespot. Only just noticed it today and I look at them every day. Only two of the female guppies have it and they were the ones I moved into a smaller tank (with water from theirs) because I thought they were going to 'give birth', after 2 days they still hadn't dropped their babies so I moved them back. Apparently it takes about 10 days for it to show though? The guy at Redwood asked if I'd done anything about 10 days ago and I guess that coincides with me getting the Guppies from Spoon and moving them to my tank. I've pulled the plants out (only a few ones that had blackbeard so I was going to get rid of them anyway) and done a 25% water change and added some White Spot Cure I got from Redwood. I've followed the instructions (2 drops for every litre - 31 litres = 62 drops) and will keep an eye on them. It doesn't say anything about doing water changes, says I should continue every 3 days if needed and no more than 3 consecutive doses. It also says I don't need to raise the temp. Is there anything else I should do? I looked through the posts but none seemed to be about whitespot for guppies so I thought I'd post about it. Their current conditions (please don't yell at me if I've got anything wrong, just tell me and I'll change it.) - 9 Guppies in an AR380 (4 males 5 females) - Water changes every 2rd-3rd day - Gravel vac once a week - Feed little bits daily - Water sits at the rooms ambient temp. The coldest I've seen it get is 21 and the hottest 28. Does fluctuating temps cause whitespot? - Normal gravel and some plants Spoon gave me - it now has no live plants and an artifical 'spawning' plant that covers the bottom. Thanks in advance
  25. My ammonia level is 0, I just wondered how harmful 0.25 would be to a fish because I imagine it could creep to that quite easily. The fish gobble up all the granules that the 'click' dishes out within about 20 seconds. Literally. It's a resonably new set up, had the fish about 2 weeks (added gradually), with a Ehiem 2008 filter thats got a slice of my older filters media in it and I change about a bucket full every 2 days (tanks about 50l) and vacuum the gravel when it looks really filthy. The guppies are a bit newer but the same cleaning rules apply (they're in an AR380).
