if you want something decorative and edible, silverbeet "bright lights" grows well for us in tyres and keeps looking good all year round. Beetroot and curly lettuces can also be pretty and carrots have nice foliage. Basil will look nice especially if you choose coloured varieties such as dark opal. I think Yates sells a mixed basil seed. Its a good companion for your tomatoes both in the garden and in the pot. It attracts bees and repels flies. Herbs would be way up on my list as they mostly like sun and warmth and are useful and attractive. Some herbs worthy of consideration would be marjoram, oregano and thyme, all cascade, love warmth and are available in several leaf colours. Thyme comes in different flavours too like lemon thyme and pizza thyme. Curry plant will like the sun, smells fantastic and has pretty silver foliage. Rosemary looks great all year round and you can choose from upright or prostrate, blue flowers or white or pink. Lovage is a herb not many people grow but its fantastic, some people call it "maggi herb" as it tastes sort of like vegetable stock - mixture of parsley, celery and a dash of je ne sais quoi. If your tyres retain moisture well you can grow mints and horseradish and parsley, all of these it is a good idea to confine anyway as they are invasive. If you get migraines, feverfew is for you, if not pyrethrum. Both repel insect nasties. As far as flowers, apart from those mentioned already, convulvulus mauritanica has gorgeous blue/purple flowers and is tough enough that councils use it. Convulvulus cneorum also, white flowers with pink veins and silvery leaves. Cosmos and stocks are good pickables and easy to grow. The smaller cistuses look good all year and smell nice. If you have a not-dry spot, daphne will flower for you at a time of year when virtually nothing else does and there is a prostrate form but you may have to look hard to find one. There are low growing sweetpeas that you don't stake that will cascade for you and be good for picking. They are normally sold under the name "Bijou". Felicia has sky blue flowers and will form a low mound cascading over. Osteospermum is easy to grow and available in some great colours, "buttermilk" is a very pretty soft cream-yellow, there is also a cool terracotta coloured one. Right, I'll stop writing a book for you, all of my garden centre training came to the fore then. You might need a few more tyres... best of luck

big story on the front page of the Dom Post about some farmer who trashed a wetland, and lots of stuff about how precious wetlands are

I guess the real difference is that a proper fancy guppy is line-bred and should breed true to type, whereas most petstore guppies could throw anything

+1 lemon
but I have had rave feedback on a white chocolate icing I did once. Don't like white chocolate myself (if there is no cocoa in it, its not chocolate)

can't figure out if it's covered under the consumer guarantees act or not

both turned upside down today
Hutt Pets not interested  though my water was perfect

I rung the pet shop in Kuripuni (Masterton Seeds and Pets) but they said they will only order in numbers asked for and cant guarantee that they will get a male They dont like having them "in stock" due to them being sensitive with water conditions and being aggressive etc.
Heading Welly direction (Churton Park) on the 20th so may have to swing by petone - if i can get my ride to take a detour
saw some gold balloon rams at Animates Melling today, both boys. No normal golds. Normal blues at Animalz petone

you have to get one that doesn't have a fungicide added to it, you go to Mitre 10 or whatever and check on the packet that it mentions that its ok for aquariums. Selleys does one. You can buy it at the lfs but its way more expensive. After you use the silicone it takes a couple of weeks before you can use the tank

they need nice water
rainwater works better for me than tap water

steel shelving is not that expensive at Bunnings and some are rated for a good weight

Sand
in Freshwater
I just got some from the Hutt river recently - the recent flooding sorted a whole lot out near my place. If you go to the riverside parking area near Whakatiki st and head down to the river it's like a little grey beach there! Took a bit of washing but turned out very nice
If you look at my pics in the elec blue ram thread you can see some of it

oops. that was a bit rude of me. what I meant to say is that, there may be some females around so fingers crossed that there are good pairs here. there are not many females in other countries.
I've heard that too, but then I have seen posts from people in the UK and stuff saying no problems getting females there

side-on, same fish
they are very relaxed and curious considering they have only been in their tank a wee while. Colouring up well too as you can see

I have totally taken over this thread
So one of my newbies let me take pics... this is the one I am *hoping* is a female and please please please say it is lol
oh please be a girl!
the other one is camera shy but is a little bigger, has bigger dorsal rays and a lot more "attitude"

Would it be possible to buy a heap of stuff then combine shipping? Even if it was from different people?
I think there are some specialist shipping companies in the states that do just that. You have your various ebay purchases shipped to their depot in the states then they send the big parcel to you. I don't know names or details sorry.

MTS is multiple tank syndrome, there are a lot of sufferers here and you can recognise them by the number of stars next to their names....

take some out in a glass and have a look at it so you can see what colour it really is
green water in itself may not be a problem

how much are they darkfur?
Would love to get a male as i have a female gold ram who needs a mate. Seems a shame but since cant find any normal male gold rams the only option left is blues...
can't that petshop in Kuripuni get you one? they are usually good. Or the other one down here to phone would be Petone Animalz, they are the best in the region, usually have rams and are nice about ordering
-
they were $38.50 in the Hutt and $39.90 in Porirua for some reason. Apparently waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less fish turned up than were ordered as the importer had a whitespot outbreak. If they treat them successfully maybe more will come on the market. If you want them I would start ringing the petshops now

suggest you put an airline into the bottle to give her some oxygen, even though fighters don't need much air I find sick fish have a greater requirement. A gentle stream of bubbles would be good. Keep that bottle clean the gunk will build up fast

nope I had one dying in a bag right in front of them and they said it must have been the ride to the store that did it  bought my last fish there
