Thanks for the replies.... i washed a few handfuls of the sand and it took almost an hour to get it so the water was clear.... I have now found a black limestone sand which i think i will use instead. So do i put the old sand in the avon? Just kidding will probably put it on the garden...

Hey you had better not mention queens and chains on this thread or i am going to pulled over the coals for being both illegal and pornographic...
And here i was thinking it was some really important thing like it has an affect on global warming or erosion or all the dangerous chemicals probably inhabiting the sand from the Dairy farm run offs and pasture feeding.....

During an expedition north of Chch I gathered a couple of buckets of dry river sand from the Amberley River. As i was driving away i noticed a sign saying that there may be dydimo in the river. Is this sand safe to use as substrata in an aquarium?

You may need to try both and experiment yourself..... as they are babies put them in a small tank for the treatment

The discus that died was my fault as i left the prazi in the tank for too long i think and I may have had the wrong dose. All of the discus were fine and well after the second lot. I have also used Levamisole (Aviverm) with good results....
Droncit is the right one (or its liquid form Adtape)
I am following the discus forum recomendation of dosing the tank every 6 months....

I lost most of my cardinals and apistogramma when i dosed my community tank with doncit/prazi....
The tabs dissolve reasonably quickly in a small amount of aquarium water. Be aware that you will have a coating of white powder (caking agent). It coats everything but will disappear over time with water changes and gravel vacs.
There are quite a few different ideas and dosing procedures on these sites and i would hesitate to offer any advice on which one to follow. I have used prazi twice now with completely different happenings. The first time i killed my larger discus. The second time the big discus were fine and i lost most of my small fish....
Good luck and I really wish a thread could be written which actually had all the accurate dose rates, a clear understanding of what drugs/treatments are used for what conditions and water change times.... Oh well i can keep hoping... Best of luck

Down here i got a box of prazi over the counter from a place called CRT Co-operative. Its a farmers trading shop.... They sell it as Droncit and it is about $45 for a 50 tab box or you might get lucky and be able to buy just one sheet that has 10 tabs. Anyway, there should some farmers co-op in Palmy but make sure that it is droncit....

It is the caking agent....I was told the same thing. When you do your water change vacuum the gravel.... you may need to do a few gravel vacs over a few days to get rid of it....

Is there a way to get the tabs to dissolve completely without leaving a white powder all through the tank? I will be dosing 2/10lt and leaving for 4hours max?
The tank has tetras, bolivians, apisto, BN, corys and both adult and juvenile discus

I agree with all of the above!!! I went with some little ones and have only two of them left. They are demanding. I now have 6 large adults and they are just amazing and no where near as demanding... It is well worth spending a bit more to get the older fish

I have read an article (late last year and dont have the link sorry) which was putting forward the theory mentioned by Spidersweb above. I know people at the lfs here in Chch had also heard of it but weren't publically advocating it....
The article made the point that it was important to have the bag open if it was to be floated....

Bunnings and Placemakers both have poly sheets. Thhey come in several thicknesses and often soft or hard density. They are about 2400 x 1200 and between $20 and $50/sheet

I currently have 4 discus of the following sizes..... 2cm, 2.5, 4 and 4.5. The 4cm chases the larger one and the larger one chases the 2.5 and they seem to leave the little one alone most of the time.
Today i am receiving 6 large adult discus. If i leave the two small ones in the tank will they be picked on by all the large ones or will, because of the increased numbers, there be less interaction? I can separate the two smaller ones into a tank of their own and grow them up. Would this be preferable?

On the discus forum there are two protocols for dosing with levamisole. Does anyone have any experience with these?
One protocol is dosing the tank with 1ml/7lts and leave in the tank for 3 days. The second is using 2mg/1lt and leave in for 24 hours ....

Do any of the people who keep discus on this forum have any experience with either of these dosing protocols?
Can someone clarify the description in the below article on metro? He suggests dosing the tank and leaving it for 8 hours. Doing a water change and then dosing again. Is this left in the tank for another 8 hours with another water change after that? He says to repeat this cycle for three days. Does that mean dosing 9 times over three days or just twice a day leaving a gap of 8 hours between each set of two doses?
Also the second article from Simply Dicus.com. It has a different protocol!!!
1. <<< * A 30% water change prior to dosing
* A temperature of 30oC
* 250mg of metronidazole / 10gallons of aquarium water.
* After 8 hours 25% water change is performed followed by another 250mg of metronidazole / 10gallons of aquarium water.
* This cycle is repeated for three days
* Note: mortar and pestle the tablet/s, add a drop of warm aquarium water and mix to thick paste; keep adding drops until you have a thinner paste; – you can then add more water, mix thoroughly and spread over the aquarium.>>>
2. The recommended treatment for Hexamita / Spironucleus is metronidazole (Flagyl). Metronidazole can be administered in a bath at a concentration of 5 mg/L (18.9 mg/gallon) every other day for three treatments. See also IFAS Fact Sheet VM-67 , Management of Hexamita in Ornamental Cichlids .

My question relates to the first article which I have quoted above. Depending on what site I go to there are several dosage rates and dosing timetables. I am interested in a discus keeper who uses this stuff interpreting these instructions.
I dont know what kind of fish Mumzy50 has but I have a tank of discus....
