  1. Hiya, at the moment I have my spraybar down low in my tank as the clown loaches seem to love hovering in the current from it. Still plenty of water movement round the tank but not enough to blow the angelfish or the others around (plus 3 air bubblers going).

Would I be right in assuming that if I put a hole in the aquarium outgoing pipe just under the water level and another on the spraybar pipe at the same level and the power went off, only a small amount of water would drain into my tub and then stop. Which means my tub and canister would still be full of water so when the power came back on, the water from the tub to the canister would create enough pressure to start the cycle up again?

  2. Cool idea, what size pump will you have in the drum? I've been thinking about doing something similar but instead of a pump (I can't figure out what size pump I'd need) I was going to hitch up my canister filter to the drum. The canister filter is good but it has such a tight seal that I have to get my husband to help open and shut it when I want to clean it and since the fish aren't really his thing, to make it easier for me, I thought of putting the flterwool and bioballs in the drum and leaving the noodles in the canister. (don't know if that would work properly)

  3. Hi, had read the article about the black finnage being cancerous etc., but it was the actual shape of the top finnage and tails I was looking at which I didn't find anything about in any of the articles. So far, only 1 or 2 of the males' swords have started growing on the second batch, the rest are still roundish tailed like the females, or have a raggidy appearance which looks very similar in all of them. The females are starting to have fry but if it turns out the dads are deformed then I wont even consider saving them from the other fish to sell.

  4. Hi all, I have approx. 40 black, black/blue, black/white swordtails. All from the same father but from two mothers (all bought from the same place). The 1st batch are approx. 3mnths old and the males look like normal swordtails but all the males in the second batch ( 2 weeks younger) have a round tail (like a female)with the sword on some just starting to appear and the dorsal fin is crown shaped. I thought it was only 1 or 2 but after watching them, there is about 10 of them like it. Is this a normal type of finnage or could they be deformed. They are quite large in body size compared to the others.

    Sorry they aren't very clear

  5. LOL didn't see 'feeder fish' written on the bag.

    They are purple emperor tetra.

So how would I know if any fish I got from any importers were the real thing or hybrids?

Not that I mind my little dude. It gets on well with its tank mates and the colour changes depending on its mood, are neat.

  6. I have found out that this little dude came from the importers (they don't buy fish off private breeders) of his parents, straight to the shop I spotted him at. My query is, if its a hybrid, would that mean its parents were in a container with other cichlids or is it a possability the people breed their own fish?

You can't see it too well on the photos but there is a red/orange stripe along the top of the dorsal fin.

  7. hi people, thanks for all the ideas. The tank will hold, 6 x clown loaches ranging in size from approx 8cm to 15cm, 4 x striata loaches, 2x albino cory, a group of emperor tetra, group of platties, group of swortails and my unidentified cichlid (approx 5cm). The plants are mainly ambulia, java moss and an assortment of others that I don't know the names of. Not really planning on getting more fish, the tank is basically for the loaches to have more room.

  8. Hi again, managed to get the larger photos which I hope will help identify this wee fellow. Have been looking on different web sites to see if I can recognize it. So, could it be a malawi or mbuna? I don't know anything about these fish except a couple of photos looked like it, so any help with its care would be appreciated. I've had it approx. a month now and it's in a 1200 x 600 x 600 tank, temp round 26 / 28deg, live plants, plenty of logs and caves to hide and is getting the same food as its tank mates, which it seems to be quite happy with at the moment. I feed tropical crumble and tropical flake food. Its tank mates are 6 x 2yr old clown loaches, 4 x 2yr old striata loaches, 2 albino cory, 11 purple emperor tetra, 3 blue ram, 3 black swordtail and heaps of platy (different ages and sizes).

  9. Thanks for the ideas guys, I tried making the pics bigger but they got too fuzzy. Will try and borrow a friends camera and see if can get a better pic.

When I said I inherited it, it was a case of bring it home or it was going to be disposed of. It had somehow gotten into a bag full of guppy and swordtail fry that was sent to my local LFS about 1 and half months ago from their supplier and it was so tiny you could hardly see it. The rep told the shop owner it was some sort of cichlid but he didn't know what, so she kept it to see what it would grow into but unfortunately it started to chew the guppy and other fish tails in the tank, so I ended up giving a home.

  10. Hi, Because my adult rams always ate their fry, I have raised over 50 bolivian butterfly babies by taking the stone that the eggs were laid on (always covered in water) and put them in a seperate tank with a few drops of Wunder Tonic in (its got the methyl blue in it) at 28 deg., sponge filter and gentle air bubbler near the stone. Left them for about 3 days once they started free swimming, then started feeding them on Liquid Fry food. Did small partitial water change once a weekly and uped the water changes as they started eating crushed flake and crumble mixed together. Lost one or two at the egg stage but the rest all grew to adults fine.
