  4. You may find that they are a type of Aphid. In which case if you have plant growing at the surface of the water, that the Aphids attack this and cause the growing buds to die. You may wish to hold the plant underwater and scoop the "Bugs" off the surface with a fine net. Better safe than sorry.
  5. Hi Billaney Tanks look great . It's not important what we think of it, but what you think of it - after all you are the one who has to live with it .... From a judges point of view, consider how things grow naturally - most of your plants would normally grow in dense bunches. As they grow (or you aquire more) you may wish to try this and see if it suits your ideas. Also you may wish to try landscaping - slope the gravel to make the tank appear to disappear into the distance, or use terracing to create different heights in the tank. A lot will depend on what you wish the viewer to focus on, your plant, a great piece of driftwood, your rockwork, the fish, or the flow of the tank as a whole. Whatever you decide, if the pictures are any indicator - its going to look great. If you need other ideas - check out Takashi Amano on the net - he creates awesome designs.
  6. Yes it is possible to use beach driftwood in a tank. Normally I would soak the wood in fresh water for approx 2 weeks. This does allow salt etc to wash out, but it also allows you to check that the wood will sink and that it is not discolouring the water too much as some woods leach and will turn your water brown very quickly. I normally collect the darker driftwoods, clean the dead wood off with a wire brush, then soak it.
  7. Just got back from the Show. It was Great !!!! To Kim (Head Judge) - thanks for taking charge and leading the Team. Despite a couple of curve balls you kept everything from falling apart. Thank you to all the Judges who worked so hard to do a fantastic job - when the going got tough - you kept going, and going, and going. Thanks To the Organisers - Thank you - it was a great weekend, a great show, and great fun. Look forward to the next one...... To the Entrants - Thank you - all the rest of us would have been useless with out your support, and your fish of course. Hope that all those who attended had a great time, I know I did. Kevin Rowe Judges & Standards
