How about 'Always' for us Oscar owners?

I wouldn't imagine that you need to go to the extreme of polyurethane. Just undercoat it twice and paint it twice with a water based paint. And make sure it dries for at least 3 weeks. Water won't penetrate it.

Are they the same as Nematodes?

Welcome to Hamilton. Dave is one of the members of the Waikato Aquarium Society, he can give you details if you want to join up. Also, pop into 'Gold Fish Bowl Aquariums' They are by FAR the best in Hamilton. Its on Heaphy Terrace.

Here is the nearly finished product. All I need to do now is organise the lids. This sucker ain't gonna go anywhere. Course now the stand COULD break because of all the extra glass that has been added.  -

Here is the design that is going to go ahead. The front bits (2.5m long)are 100mm wide. All in 10mm glass. Except the bits underneat that are going to support to lids, which looks like this... Heres what it looks like so far... -

I was just thinking about it. Sounds too high maintenance for me anyway.

I have been toying with the idea of a saltwater tank for the lounge. It would only be a 75L tank. I don't know much about them and was wondering if any of you could fill me in a bit: - I have heard they are more expensive than freshwater, is it true, and on such a small tank would it really be THAT much more expensive? - How easy/hard are saltwater fish to keep? - Do you have to clean them as often as freshwater? - Do I need any special equipment. - What sort of fish could I keep in such a small tank? Cold water and warm.

GOOD NEWS!! The Pacu from the tank I clean has gone. Dunno where, but as least its gone. The threats must have done their job.

Once digitalpose has untied its knickers I'll post the diagram of what it is going to be like. -
I've only ever had Fluvals, and the 404 is much better then the 304. It is a dream to prime and certainly gets the water moving. Lots of people rave about Eheims but I'm happy with my Fluvals.

MY TANK CRACKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. Of course it does. Good point. I shall suggest that to the tank maker tomorrow.....which is ah...today. (pm shift....who'd have em  ) True, but as of now, I'm of the mind to make it too strong. Because there was not enough bracing. It hasn't got the lid made yet, so no lights. Yeah, it is only 50mm wide front and back, and it is two legths joined in the middle to make up the complete length. Apparently they don't make 6mm glass 2535mm long. (Exact length of tank) I shall suggest it, maybe they make 10mm that long. I want them wider in fact. See pic below. I don't care how long it takes, although B*tch Face might have a different opinion. I didn't think it would. Dad said the same thing, and it makes sense that the bottom or sides would go if it wasn't level. The bottom piece of glass is 2535mm long and 450mm front to back (wide). The tank is 650mm high. The front, sides and back panes of glass have not been brought in (towards the centre of the tank. There are 3 in the middle of the tank, and the two at either end. Here is what I have in mind. Sorry if it is a bit hard to interpret. I will post pictures of my old tank which has a top like it. Anyway, I know what I mean There are no measurements on it as it is just a quick sketch. The front and back panes, along the length of the tank will be 100mm wide. The access point in the middle will probably not be quite that wide as it looks in the pic. The skinny little bits either side of the access points will be closest to the bottom of the tank, the idea of that is so that the glass flaps that can be opened will be recessed (sp?)so that the whole top is flush.... Man thats confusing, anyone who can work out what I mean by this pic deserves a chocolate fish. I'll post pics of the other one tomorrow, then you'll know what I mean. I need to go to bed. -

Ive got long arms. -
The bacteria in your tank break down ammonia into Nitrite, and then Nitrate. Nitrate is harmless to fish, but the levels of it will still rise in the tank. Water changes dilute the Nitrate levels as well as a small amount of ammonia that starts to build up again when your tank is dirty.

Im pretty damn sure its level. I have used a spirit level and all. Basically there just wasn't enough bracing for it. I'm not sure about insurance. I shouldn't imagine I will have to pay for the repairs. -
So its Saturday morning, you're sitting down having a nice breakfast and a refreshing cup of tea with your father at the dining table opposite the tank when..... *POP* OS's Dad: "What the hell was that?" OS: (Jumps out of chair to investigate) "Dunno, sounded like a heater blowing" OS's Dad: "I certainly hope so" *POP* (OS sees the front pane of glass move in the direction it was never intended to) OS: "Shhhhhiiiiiiiiittttt quick dad come and hold it" So tank water was siphoned and bucketed quicker than you can imagine out the front door, and into the old tank as well, while we both held out breath and hoped like hell it didn't decide to go. Fish were relocated and 3 were put into the chilli bin to go to the lfs to be babysat. Talk about lucky.... 1 We were both sitting in front of it when it happened 2 It was a Saturday and I wasn't home alone 3 The weather looked dodgy so we decided not to go out and get a couple of sheets of MDF for the lid. 4 It didn't blow the front of it off and empty 179g of water/fish and gravel into the dining room. The lfs guy is coming to do a home visit on Monday to assess it and redesign the bracing. I have told him that I only want 2 holes for access and I want him to base his design around the old tank. I'll post pics of that later. [sigh] What a morning. And I was worried about the stand breaking.

Speaking of Pacus, I clean a tank for a guy who has one in his shop front. He is 'baby sitting' a Pacu for a friend. He was supposed to have it for 2 weeks, it has been 2 months! As if the Pacu wasn't bad enough, he has 1 large Oscar, 2 G jurapari, 1 HUGE Pleco and 2 convicts to boot. (all in a 400L sqaure tank) Today I gave him an ultimatum...get rid of the fish, or find someone else to clean your tank. These fish should definately not be on the market. I like them, and would love to own a tank large enough to accommodate one, but thats not going to happen in the too near future. [/grumble]

Sweet, what have you got in your tank? What are the dimensions?
-
No no, just wondering because I have adopted an 8" Red Oscar from the Goldfish Bowl that used to live in a 1200L tank. Just wondering if that person was a member here.
-
Anyone got one?

You break it, you make another one.
