yeah agar is made from seaweed and gelatin is made from animal bones, when mixing in agar make sure that the vege mash is boiling and that u pour the agar in slowly whisking at all times or it will just clump up and wont mix in properly. it comes in a small packet that will have "telephone brand" written on it and has a picture of a telephone on it, you can find them in any asian shop

anybody using the aquaone cf2400 seems pretty cheap for a filter that is rated to be putting out 2400l/h probably isnt that much but still seems like a good filter
-
anyone know where you can get ammonia from and how much it costs
-
anyone got any cycled media i can buy need to cycle my tank quickly, cheers
-
so i can just do a vac and replace the water with straight tap water, that would save me a lot of time i gotta carry a bucket to and from the tank to top it up again which is a PITA lol, cheers
-
sorry to bring up an old post but i find this discussion very interesting, i read in books saying to do water changes every 2 weeks to a month, and to make sure that the water going into the tank is the same coming out but while reading here most people just do a vacuum i guess and just fill with water straight from the tap with out adding anything or even adjusting the temp, would this depend on the fish species and how often do you guys do water changes, iv just set up a new tank and will be keeping electric yellows and a few other of a similar species will doing the above have any effect on the well being of the fish or will this be ok to do
-
lol fish keeping is such an awesome hobby they do some interesting things, lol thanks for your help guys much appreciated
-
so keeping electric yellows and similar type of fish should be ok then??
-
i have a geophagus Surinamensis its about 6-7 inches and the cats are little bit bigger, the geo isnt aggressive only when the cats go into his cave he chases them away i have one cat that chase the other ones around abit, thats why i thought i should upgrade to a bigger tank more space for them to roam and plus i will be adding alot more rocks and making caves with them stacked up with holes going through so they have their own little territory
-
hey guys, i have a few q's i have recently bought a nice new big tank its 1.5mtrs long 55cm wide and 55cm high im going to put a geo in and 3 featherfin cats in it, i have been asking around if i will be able to keep some electric yellows in with them and have been told this is ok, the ph on my small tank at the moment is 7.8 and temp is 26, assuming that the new tank has the same water parameters can i keep these fish together, there will be plenty of rocks, caves and hiding place for them but just wanna know if this is ok thanks in advance for your help :

so if was to get 2 juvies then that would be ok or should i stick to one and just get other fish instead of having just the clowns , and would i need a specific fish to eat the eggs and if any hatch would the babies get eatin, 25% water changes once a month sounds good so ill do that instead of the evry 2 weeks, is there any other info i need to know, and a question about rock cooking would this process happen quicker if the rocks were smaller pieces i got this theory that i should but you guys know better lol and then i could just glue the rocks together in the shape i want and form a large piece would this work???
-
wow that had out, layton knows so much, are you a marine biologist or something lol
-
im gonna go with no sand and will get some sort of protection for the bottom glass, i will take gettin a bigger skimmer into consideration when i go to get it, the tank will be very lightly stocked and 25% water change done every 2 weeks like my freshwater tank that i have now, do clowns fight each other if they are the same gender, i am looking at gettin 2 but dont want breeding or anything goin on in my tank lol
-
ok so iv decided to go with a BB tank, tank is now goin to be around 220 ltrs (heard that the more water u have the more stable)100cm long 50 wide and 45 high, or something like that im in the middle to sorting out a warmer, lights and power head, skimmer is still going to be the deltec mce300, the rocks will start cooking on friday, what do u guys think about the setup so far, next up start looking at fish what can i keep i wanted a yellow tang but think the tank might be to small for it so not sure what i can keep in this size tank any suggestions??
-
thanks layton i noticed you didnt have any sand or anything at the bottom of ur tank is this ok i always figured that it could damage(scratch or crack) the bottom glass as in the big pieces of rock moving or droppin or is it glued in place
-
hey lduncan (layton) is it possible to get a pic of ur set up just wanna see what ur set up looks like, as a reference and quide for me to follow just want as much ideas as possible for when i get my set up going, thanks in advanced
-
thanks but i think id be better off going through the whole cooking and cycling process it will only help me in the long run if something happens, and seems to be cheaper too plus gives me time to save some extra money for other things like fish while its going through the cycling process
-
cool thanks to everyone who helped out i think i got most of the info i needed to get the tank started gonna buy some rocks soon and will get them cooking as soon as i get them, tank will arrive in about a week or 2 and the skimmer will also be here soon, excellent this is getting very exciting my first marine tank is now finally underway
-
cool, this process takes some time so i might get some on wednesday and get some buckets out and get this started just for more info do i need to have a heater in there to keep the rocks at the same temp and salinity as the tank is goin to be, so after this is all done (how long will it take anyway??) i can put water in the tank get it up to temp and skimmer going add the cooked rock and start adding fish straight away or should i wait a week or so after the rocks have been added
-
can this cooking procees be done with rock just bought from the shop as in dry and not been in water for awhile or does it have to have some sort of growth on it before the cooking process can take place, so all i gotta do is get some buckets and mix up a batch of aquarium water add the rock with a warmer and pump to oxygenate the water and leave it in the dark coverd for about a week and then remove and rinse in salt water and put them in new water and just repeat the process until hardly any stuff comes out of the rocks and settles at the bottom and then i can put it in a newly set up tank and cycle or should the tank be cycled before rock is added
-
thanks guys uv been very helpfull, ill be on the marine website soon just havn some regitration problems lol, cant wait to get it all goin very excited
-
well i might be getting a deltec mce300 soon if things go as planned, how do u get live rock i was told this takes along time and cant be bought but read in books that LFSs should keep them, how much would i need in a tank thats about 120ltrs, is it just corals that have nitrogen cycling bacteria growing on it or something completely different, thanks for ur help guys ill read through the forum for more info on this i wanna know as much before i even fill the tank with water
-
thanks warren sorry about the TM link wont happen again, thanks for unlocking it

hey guys first of all just wanna say you guys have amazing tanks iv been looking through and all the people on here are good at marine aquariums its amazing i dont know how u guys do it , i have been inspired and want to start a marine tank up iv been keeping tropical freshwater fish for about 3 years now and have wanted to do this for sometime but been put off cos i keep hearing how hard it is to get a tank going and maintaining it so thought i get my feet wet with a tropical tank first, this is what i already have (from old freshwater setup i had) for the set up and need to know what else i need 25gallon tank aquaone cf1200 canister filter 150w heater 2 lights with 2 bulbs in each themometre i know i need a protien skimmer and came across this one on trademe seems to be a good one can handle up to 100gallons http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=96593616 some info on the skimmer http://www.marineland.com/products/cons ... sclone.asp so what else do i need its gonna be fish only until i get more experience with marine tanks and i am only looking at keepin 2 or 3 fish only as i dont wanna over load a small tank
-
thanks Afrikan, just needed to make sure lol
