    Seahorses

Thanks for your support DJ. I've tried the wildlife park in Tauranga as he did say he had some I could buy but I havn't had any replies to the emails I sent him, nor the PMs. I'm rural too, don't go away often, but happy to help you out if you need a hand.

    Sick seahorse???

Did 20% water change, have been doing this weekly anyway at the moment as it is a relatively new tank. Gave her a fresh water bath. Needed to adjust PH. Quite happy in there, id not seem stressed at all. Took her out after 8 mins and put her back in the main tank. She bobbed up and down a bit, looked like she was happy enough - better than before, then she went into the back again and has stayed there. Will try again tomorrow. lfs said try the frest water bath for longer as some of the pathogens that might be causing the illness could take longer to kill. I guess it's do or die. Will be going food hunting tomorrow to find something nice and tasty for her. The other two horses are very healthy, so at least if I lose one it's not too much of a major.

    Sick seahorse???

This is a question for seahorse mad, or anyone else with any ideas. One of my wee girls is not that great. She doesn't look like she is eating, although I can't watch her 24 hours a day. She has a white mark on her side that is about 1 1/2 - 2 mm round. No other spots that I can see, so don't think its whitespot. Continually hides in a large hole under the live rock. I have isolated her in a small floating plastic container and dosed her with some antibiotic from the lfs. adding a little water every hour to keep things fresh, don't have a seperate tank. Water is at 18 degees so would prefer to keep her in the same environment as the others. Did a 20% water change 5 days ago, been about 2 weekly lately. Tried hand feeding her yesterday and she took a little food, does not seem to want any today. Any help appreciated.

    Rockpools?

Thanks for the ideas, will go have a look out at Whananaki after the school holidays, I know it gets a bit hectic out that way. Went out to Tutukaka area and had a look yesterday. I've looked before but it's funny how an interest in something makes you look harder and see more. Found heaps of little purple cushion stars, left them where they were. Got two little hermits, See how the little ones go first. Found a huge number of massive shrimp - edible size. Bought two home to watch for a while. One has shed its skin - not sure if that was stress from the move or if it was shedding anyway. Saw a heap of little fish, rockpool fish of many types. Got a wee black fish no more than 20mm long, it has a white stripe all the way from head to tail like a mohawk. Hubby thinks its a Sandagga (spelling??) Wrass. Any clues would be appreciated. It loves to hide in among the coral holes and rock at the bottom of the tank. I can see this becoming an obsession, however, I think what we have now is enough for the time being.

    Fantastic place

Hi all, I must say this is a fantastic forum. I am new to this tank thing, but in a few hours I have found info and had great tips from some of you. Up until now my main interest was family, farm, Trademe and ARCHERY, now I have to add another time filler, - that's watching my tank, where we house some seahorses. Looking forward to reading more of the interesting subjects.

    live rock question

Hi Seahorsemad, I'm pretty sure that I have two potbellied (Pair) and one Kuda girl. The girls look completely different from each other. They were the last ones he had in the shop. I'm pretty happy with my set up, my kids are keen to add some hermit crabs, but I was worried they would scavange too much food to quickly. I guess if I add one or two wee ones we could always take them back to the beach if they were a problem. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. As soon as I find my battery charger I will post a photo for you. Still in it's infancy but I spend hours watching them dance around. I'm sure the male Potbellie is trying to lure his partner with his antics. Will have to watch and wait. Not sure what to do if we have some wee ones appear.

    live rock question

Set up just before christmas, has had one water change - quater of the volume. All rocks etc came with the setup, all from the same supplier. Dark parks on the rocks are a bit 'fluffy' 1 mm or 2 mm of growth. Seahorse are healthy and thriving so far.
  16. Hi all, I'm a newbie Seahorse lover. Did a bit of lurking about this site yesterday and found some fascinating information on tanks etc etc... Beautiful photos of reef setups. Envious, but have to start somewhere. We have recently acquired some seahorses and they are doing great. Our live rock however is making bubbles, I assume it is a chemicle exchange of some type, but dont know if this is a problem. some of the rock is quite dark in some places. We did do a bit of an overfeed when we first got them, all the excitement i guess. skimmer and filter working well, chiller set on 18, everything else just tikityboo. We would love to have a few other live items in the tank as well but being coldwater I'm not sure what to add. The kids managed to find some large rockpool shrimp that are too big for the seahorse to eat, so they help with the cleanup, but some live plant or fish would be great, any suggestions would be appreciated.
