  1. I have a neon who is not looking well. He/she has had an open mouth for a week now, isolates himself and has a tendancy to swim facing down. I thought he'd be dead by now, but he's not, so dpes anyone know what I can do to help him? Cheers
  2. The fertiliser substrate is under the gravel. There is also a new log in the tank which could be leaching brown into the tank. The first fish to go in it will be my classroom goldfish over Christmas anyway, so they should be hardy enough to cope with anything!
  3. Set up the fish tank and despite several water changes the water still looks murky. The water/filter had been in there for two-three weeks before, do ya all think that it will be safe to put fish in? I don't have a water testing kit. Have never had one and hope to never need one. Has anyone ever had fish negatively affected by fertiliser?
  4. Well one of the other goldfish died earlier in the year... it was like 'oh, not again!'
  5. I have got a thermometer in the tank, it is set to 22. Maybe I should get some more things in the tank for the bristlenose to hide in/under. Currently there is just some lame yellow ceramic boot. Maybe she died of fright from too many kids eyes looking in. Was a shame. Had to tell the kids I'd taken her home... guilt!
  6. No he/she doesn't seem harrassed at all. It just likes to hang out reting on the gravel or on the log. Just the same as the other one. Have seen them chasing each other, but never any eggs, I read they haven't been reared other than in some big lab where they do something top secret to get them to breed!
  7. I had two of my bristlenoses in with the two goldfish at school, then a few days ago my medium sized female (I think) just upended it. Nothing looked too out of the ordinary. Anyone have any ideas why this might have happened and if I should bring my other big bristlenose home to our tropical tank? Don't wanna loose him!
  8. Does anyone know why my chain loach seems to be fading? My other one seems the nromal dark pattern.
  9. My male chases my femalea round the tank, she gets stressed sometimes and gets a stripe down her side, although it is paler than this one appears, however, in the pet shop the rams often seem to have slightly different colourations, so i guess thats what it could be?
  10. I have a loevly healthy pair of rams I bought from organism in chch. friendly little fells they are too!
  11. interesting, john at organism in chch has bettas in the guppy tank, all seemed peaceful... do you think if a betta was raised from a young age in a tank with the others it would have greater tendancies to be peaceful?
  12. Would a betta, a couple of corydoras and some guppies work?
  13. If Bristlenoses get too big, what would be a good 'janitor' fish to start with?

    22L tank

What would you all advice for putting in a little 22L tank. Bought one for my niece. Would say 6 neons, a betta and a bristlenose be too much, or could we put in more? Do you think a bristlenose would get too big, I know my bristlenose is getting pretty large and would look silly in her tank!!! How many platys or guppies could fit in the tank? Other ideas?
  15. The fish died. Despite water change and emergency removal to another tank and a little bit of salt she died. Feel sorry for the kids... lessons of life eh?
  16. No, the fish tank is my class goldfish tank, the other fish are my fish at home!!! Will do a water change!!!
  17. Our classroom goldfish is sitting at the bottom of the tank wobbling from side to side. Yesterday she spent the day at the bottom of the tank under the filter. What can we do to save her?!!! Her tank has a heater, might it be too hot? There are two other fish in the tank. Ek! Don't want the kids goldfish to die!!!
  18. oh really? I didn't know that... I've never seen it opened up before then... looked kind of newly established! Maybe they should look at finalising the look then!!!
  19. I went to Critter Kingdom on Stanmore yestreday and the tanks were immaculate. They also have a very new par out the back with lovely tanks set up with big cichlids, discus etc... even have a some type of big eastern dragon lizard! Worth a look in. But the young girl didn't know what she was talking about and the manager was a bit gruff and tried to talk to me like I didn't know what I was talking about. Popped over to Moorhouse Animates and stood around for ages for one of the many staff to actually help. Didn't purchase anything cos I was too fuming by then to part with my money!!!
  20. they look like they provide great water flow... now there's a new get rich quick scheme! I'll add that to my list that includes figuring out how to breed dwarf loaches!!! Are those suctions pads on them or diamantes?!!
  21. are you talking about the plastic ones with a v shaped part in the bottom? I have a basic rectangular net with one compartment.
  22. what about for hatching eggs themselves, do they get enough water flow over them? do you put the parents in with them or does that stress them too much?
  23. Just seeing what experiences ya'll have had?
  24. Funny you should say that about the car vs tanks... I was just saying as we were driving through the city today that boy racers should get tanks to spend their money on, at least then they'd have a purpose for driving their cars... to the lfs!
  25. If MAF closed the borders then surely they'd go round euthenising all our fish. We'd have to breed them underground, out in the bush and sell them wrapped in tin foil! All sorts of cool phrases would come about so only people in the know would know what was going on... if if if!
