  1. I made a home made trap out of an old container that is like a very small plant pot, It came from the bottom of one of the plants that I bought when I was setting up a planted tank. It is about 50mm high and about 30mm in diameter, and has cut outs for the plant roots about 10mm square. I found an old lid that from a sauce bottle that sort of pressed on, put in a bit of cucumber and left it in the bottom of the tank over night. Next morning I just removed it shook it in the kitchen tidy, rebaited the trap and put it back in again. Over the space of about a week I must have trapped about a thousand of the annoying little suckers!!! Cheap and effective I reckon.
  2. Sorry Gerald, Can't remember how to post a link!! I did a "Google" search on "How to calculate the glass thickness of a fish tank" and there are pages of URL's one below if you wan't to check it out, or do a search yourself. Cheers, http://www.fnzas.org.nz/articles/techni ... thickness/ P.S. Good grief it worked!!!!

    Lost!

No, Gone without a trace! Thought if it was the cat I might have found a tell "tail", pardon the pun. It is a real mystery!

    Lost!

I seem to have misplaced one of my Golden Algae Eaters! He was last seen two days ago, in the guppy tank, energetically cleaning the bottom, as he is want to do! But this morning he's gone! Has he left home? Has he become just another "fishy" meal for "Tequila" the cat? He hasn't appeared as a skeleton when I vacuumed the tank today! So I don't think he is deceased! If he turns up at your place, can you let me know via this forum, and I will come and get him! He really should be home, there's a lot of cleaning still to be done!
  6. Rifle Single shot or semi-automatic?
  7. Pardon my ignorance, but, what are you using the LED's for?
  8. I am going away for about 9 days, I don't have a problem having my tanks fed, have trained geriatric father, and he does not overfeed, My question is, will my community tanks be o.k. for an extended period, without water changes? I used to test every week, and had Nitrite readings of zero, and nitrate readings of around 20, after seven days, so now I don't bother testing! Tanks are established, and with 25% water changes on a weekly basis, all is cool. I am thinking of doing a 50% water change on each tank, the day before I go, in the hope that this will tide them through until I get back, what do you collective guys and guyesses think?
  9. Tsarmina, What sort of algae? I had a serious brush algae problem in one of my tanks, used single dose of "excell" for about a week, introduced a young "Flying fox", algae gone in just over a week. Still don't know if it was the "excell" or the algae eater, or a combination of both!!!
  10. Thanks Hazara, I also have a Canon, Eos 350D though, I haven't tried it with tank photos yet, I was using an Olympus FE-170 in Macro mode, but I might charge the batteries for my Sony Cybershot, as I have had good success with other subjects in the past. It's just a case of getting around to it though!!!! I am due for a bit of glass scrubbing and water changing myself over the weekend, so will maybe give it another try, a couple of hours after the maintenance.
  11. Digging deep here!!! but the ballast is to provide the voltage to ionise the gas in the tube, when the starter switch(electronic or electromechanical) opens. If the combined wattage of the tubes is less than the rated wattage of the ballast you should be o.k. Also, some fluoro's have the tube heater elements wired in series, so if one of the heater elements in the tubes open circuits, then you will lose the operation of the other tubes. A good idea is to replace any tubes that look like they are becoming discoloured on the ends, or when they "flick" for a long time before starting.
  12. Wish I could take a photo as clear as this!!! What type of camera and lens are you using? I have tried to take photos of my tanks, but so far none are good enough to put on this site!
  13. Hi from Whangarei also, welcome!!!
