  1. Hi Heir, Was looking for freshwater shrimps when I was still in New Zealand. I got as far as a LFS in Tauranga and at that time (2 years ago) they said they stopped selling them because it ain't popular, so I guess they are back at it. Anyways I keep some shrimps (30 in total) in my 180 L tank at the moment, some Crystal Red Shrimp, Ninja Shrimp and Glass Shrimp (I have just moved to Melbourne after my partner vetoed every decision I made). They basically eat anything you give them; algae, flakes, veges. They are great stuff and fun to watch. Good to hear that some people have them. I assumed that you bought some freshwater glass shrimps.
  2. Opps, I am sorry about this. i didn't know that... y r they selling it in animates?
  3. Congrats... It's a great feeling...
  4. hi everyone, just went back to animates to make sure i got all the plant names correct. Sorry alanmin, my mistake again, mystic is right, it is ambulia. Darn need to replant them again, was looking for short stem plants to put in front my my driftwood. Any suggestions?
  5. oh actually not sure myself with plant names. bought it from animates, looks long enough when i googled so thought it would be that. heh.... my mistake
  6. 360 L tank housing 8 ottos, 8 neon tetras, 4 gouramis (one honey, one pearl, two dwarfs), 6 black widow, one brittlenose and one pleco. Filtration: Fluval 405 Injected CO2 with a reactor, 4 fluoro's 6500K and 2 8000K. Substrate: 7.5 kg of Dalton Aquamix (thanks to plantman's great suggestion, a lot cheaper too), one inch layer of white stones. Plants: Glosso, hairgrass, riccia, Rotala Indica, Hygrophila Diffomis, Red and Green Pine, E. Osiris, Vallisneria gigantea,Alternanthera roseafolia,Shinnersia ,java fern. Think that's about it.
  7. Will do Brianemone once i get back from work Thanks guys. Cheers.
  8. And thanks people for the glowing comment. Been trying to improve the tank and wanted to come on to ask u guys for advise but was just too shy... finally had the guts hehehe... maybe because of the lack of sleep last night and now since I need to go to work in 30 mins with 4 hours of sleep.
  9. Ah yes alanmin, thanks for that, now I know the name of the plant was wondering what was it  Shiuh: My tank is a 360 L tank, using 4 flouro with 6500 K and 2 flouros with 8000K. All together about 244 watt.
  10. Yea I am hoping the alternanthera will go well after all those trimmings. They aren't very impressive at the moment. On the left, sorry still not very familiar with the plants I have. Shinneria=long green grass looking plants i thought they are ?Vallisneria? Corret me if i am wrong Cheers.
  11. Just out of a good challenge can anyone suggest a nice and difficult plant to grow that might add colour to my very ZzZZZzzzZZzzzzZZZ tank. thanks a bunch 8)
  12. Could not fall back to sleep tonight, hence decided to strip my tank and redo part of my tank. Before: After: I am no expert in planted tank so any suggestions how to improve the outlook of my tank would be greatly appreciated.
  13. sounds like a good plan.. better be safe than sorry.
  14. i just assumed that the power head i installed helps circulate the water at the bottom of the tank better. temp has been stable at 28 degrees Normal size fan which i got from K-mart, ?$20 they are on sale now
  15. I had similar prob as well, my heater set at 26 degrees and although my tank termometer showed 29 degrees, it's still lights up. My only conclusion is that my water circulation in my 400 L tank is not sufficientt (as i put the output of my fluval way up at the top), hence the bottom of my tank is usually colder than the top. To solve the prob, installed a sparer power head at the bottom of my tank, nil complaint so far....... *fingers cross*
  16. Had the same problem 2 weeks ago *temp was 31* and no one was at home to hear the buzzing of my termometer, 3 of my loaches did not survive but the rest did, had my fan running across the tank and no probs since.
  17. Hey, Was using DIY yeast+sugar, was great initially till I had two accidents (spilled all over carpet and floor), got pretty annoyed with it. Furthermore it's hard to regulate the amount of CO2 I need for my tank. But it's super cheap though, only problem is that I have a 400 L tank and I make up 2-3 bottles each time. In the end I went for the cylinder+regular+needle valve and the works. Had it for 3 weeks now and my plants are doing great, better than DIY in my opinion. Hassle free and all I do is switch it off at night before I go to sleep (have not gotten round to get a solenoid yet). Regulator and needle valve=$220 (Bought it from Australia by SERA) Cylinder 1.8 kg + diffuser (courtesy of blueandkim)=$220 Fill up the bottle = $12 (duration ???) Since u r in Auckland, u should just shop around, my mates tell me that they could get cylinder for a good deal. Hope that helps.
  18. Thanks everyone. Helped a lot. Yea I have two tubes of 18000 which i bought especially for my marine tank eons ago (never used). It brings out the colour of my neons hence i thought I would just mix and match
  19. Thanks antwan. Opps I might be wrong. Will double check when i get my butt off this chair
  20. Hi there, My flatmate has been bitching to me about using normal flouro's (6500 Kelvin Ratings) for plant growth. He says that it doesn't help. I have a 360L tank, 6 floros (2x18000 K, 2 x 10000, 2 x 6500 K). Could someone help clarify whether I should just get rid of my 6500 K floros. Cheers. And thanks.
  21. Thanks a lot. That's comforting to know they don't do any harm to my fishies. Cheers.
  22. Hi everyone, need help as I have just noticed ?white bugs/fleas in my 360 L tank. They stay on the water, hoping about onto the side of the glass tank, where it is dry. Noticed that they do stay on the water for quite some time. Never had them before. Just noticed it today, what do i do with them? Could not get a picture of them as they are pretty tiny, like specs of dust with 2 tentacles and ? 6-8 legs. Hopefully someone could guide me here. Cheers.
  23. I had the exact same problem 2 weeks ago and I read somewhere in the forum SAE helped, bought two and it has been great since. Hope that helps.
