  1. Found a great food for white worm cultures: pressed pellets from rabbit food. My cultures have just goes balistic on it. I also found it doesn't spoil ike breead.
  2. One of my female golden guppies has got a slightly swollen red eye. Is it likely a disease or injury? If disease what is the cure? and is it contagious? Cheers!

The fitting is not very old I think; no more than 4 or 5 years...is that too old?

I bought a cool daylight tube today (4 foot) but when I took the old tube out and put the new one in the new one didn't really seem to want to fire up. When it finally did it only burned brightly at the ends. Anyone got any idea why? (I put the old tube back in as it is brighter)
  5. Thanks for the tonic salt tip Keri Anne. I'll remember to ask next time I am there. I don't use it myself, but like you say I could wean them off it slowly in the Q tank next time. I take a fair bit of care and time to get them used to the new water conditions. Doing the whole make sure the temp is the same, then taking out some water out of the bag and replacing it with water from the tank, repeating until I am fairly certain there is little diff between the two. They are doing fine today, they are active and hungry. No female in the tank with them, but a bit of no contact sparring all the same Thanks all, I'll keep them in Q for a month. Might be time to buy a new tank. 8)
  6. Thanks for the replies. Some more info: They are guppies, the tank that they went into is an existing tank, it had adolescent guppies in it until yesterday (they went into the main tank). The 'sick' one at the LFS was a female. She was skinny, had slightly red gills, and her fins were clamped and she didn't move much. Also the males in the tank didn't go near her. That said as she was 'white' (or should that be golden or blonde?) I was picking that the gills might have been more noticeable anyway. But even so she didn't look in the greatest of shapes. I have in the past had female guppies look like it just after they have given birth. I also think that they arrived this week at the LFS (I go there weekly), so she might still have been stressed from the journey. I couldn't ask many questions, as the fish sales person didn't work yesterday; the person that helped me was going to leave a note for her to see if the 'sick' female guppy needed to be put in quarantine.
  7. I bought some new fish today; I have them in a small spare tank, waiting to see if they get sick (one I didn't buy in the tank at the LFS didn't look too healthy). Question is: how long do I keep them seperate?

    Itchy fishies!

Hi Caper Just posting to say good luck and that I hope your fishies get better soon. Can't add anything useful myself; I just haven't got the experience.
  9. Wow, wonder if its offspring also have two heads. Imagine a tank full of them, freaky!

Looks really nice! Please also post some pics as it gets closer to completion
  11. Thanks, I guess he isn't right right for this tank. Pity as I really enjoyed watching him cruise around the tank.
  12. Had to last night give my rainbow shark to a mate who had a spare tank. Almost overnight it changed its behaviour. Last week it was a really placid fish, almost timid. Suddenly it was chasing everything (bronze corys, bristlenoses and guppies) It was nibbling them and even butting them with his head! Suddenly every other fish was cowering. Anyone else seen this sudden change in behaviour?
  13. Just don't forget to unplug your heater as you move it from the tank to the baby bath...you'll only forget to do it once.
  14. I think The Pet House will give you a call if you want to see his marine tank once finished. I left my name with him this weekend; as I commented on his small tank and how nice it looked. He offered to ring me. I don't even run a marine tank but I love to look at them  He knows I only run tropicals. I bought another small tank this weekend...boy was the wife hecked off....specially as I had just asked her whether or not she really needed the winter coat.
  15. Bummer...did she think that they were white worm?
  16. Creepy! Sorry can't help with the plants, I am sure others will though. Good luck
  17. Cool; congrats! What do you expect the fry to look like when they grow up?
  18. Very cool looking fish! Congrats on the spawning!

    White worms

I use those square glass coasters in my icecream containers, I was lucky enough that my wife was given some of these for her birthday. She solved the riddle of the missing coasters last week and wasn't too upset, I pointed out there was still a packet in the cupboard not opened. In hindsight I should have used those instead of the ones from the coffee table...
  20. Yep, thanks...I think I had convinced myself that this was the case by the end of my last post. Thanks for the confirmation
  21. Thanks! However this leads on to another (set of) observation(s)/ question(s): I don't quite get the reference on this web site (the plant survey). It states that it grows from Canada to Liousiana; but the temperature range is only 18-24. It also seems to be listed as invasive on some US websites; which colaborates the range of US states and Canada. The temperature range seems as a result wrong? Doesn't snow and freeze in the state of NY? Does it stop growing under those conditions? Maybe even dies back to its rhizomes? Is that what the plant survey is telling me? If it was invasive in the US, would it be in danger of being invasive in NZ?
  22. Anyone know what this is? Particularly interested in how large it grows....
  23. Thanks for the answers! How do guppy fry fare in a double doze of Flourish Exel?
