  1. Congrats! Baby BNs are extremely cute. I went to my first week of uni this week and came back to find the male BN sitting on some eggs.
  2. Don't you end up collecting all the plants and decorations in the tank with the net while trying to catch the fish? I hate having to replant every thing. I drained most of the water and left about 10cm of water in the bottom.
  3. I feel your pain with trying to catch fish. I only just moved my 2 foot tank into a different room. After half destroying my tank trying to catch the glowlight tetras, I gave up and left them in there with some water. I couldn't totally drain my tank anyway, 'cause I knew there were platy and bristlenose fry hiding somewhere in gravel. I'm very thankful that my tank isn't any bigger. It weigh a ton with the bit of water and gravel in it. Did you have any casualties? I had one. A smallish silver platy got stuck in my net, and I never saw it until it was too late.
  4. It also really depends on the fighter's personality. I've kept a fighter in my community tank (platies, glowlights, bristlenose, guppies, mollies) with no worries, but the fighter I have now is an aggressive little fella, so he's got his own tank.
  5. Glowlight tetras would look cool with the dark gravel. I reckon they're pretty forgiving when it comes to mistakes as well.
  6. I've had a molly before that would eat the fins of a betta's tail... (I've also had a platy that did the same thing too) Also the betta could be ripping his tail on any plastic plants that you may have in there.
  7. I don't plan on breeding them anytime soon. I don't have any tank space for fry. Do you think a type of barb or danio would be suitable with the paradise fish? If so, what ones?
  8. Just a couple of questions regarding paradise fish... - Are they really cold water fish? ie they don't need a heater? - What would be suitable tank mates for one paradise fish (would like a male, but think I can only get females) in a 40L tank? - Are paradise fish fussy eaters? Any general comments about this fish would be appeciated as well. Thanks in advance!
  9. The first couple of platy fry batches are exciting. I've reached the stage where it is almost annoying because I have no where to put the fry and they're not getting eaten in my community tank. So my community tank is starting to look very crowded.

    White algae?

At the moment, I'm setting up a little 12L (I think) tank. It has been running for the past couple of days with no fish in it. I've noticed this white/clear stuff growing on the heater and the rock I have in there. It feels very slimely. (actually, it reminds me of snot) I think it is an algae as the platies that were tempoary put in there ate it, but I'm not sure. Any idea what it is and how I can get rid of it? The tank is going to be for my betta and he sure doesn't eat algae.
  11. I was planning on burning the notes, but the grass around here was looking a little dry. Nope, I did no scholarship exams at all. The normal ones were challenging enough. I take it you did though? I only did the L3 internal for Calc. I was planning on doing more, but since I bombed out on L2 English externals last year, I had to do more English. Thanks for the welcome Bill!
  12. By 'looking after' I mean feed the fish. She'll never clean the tank for me. I'll be cleaning the tank when I come home on the weekends. This year I took L3 Physics, Chem, Bio, Stats, some English and some Calculus. I quite happily threw out all my English work a couple of days ago.
  13. I was actually wondering if the Wairarapa club was up and running. Thanks for the info. Actually I can't get too many tanks as I'm off to Uni next year (fingers crossed), and my sister is only willing to take care of one fish tank while I'm away. (will be home on the weekends though)
  14. Just like to say "Hi" and how nice it is to find a NZ based fish site. I haven't been keeping fish that long, (a year in Jan.) but I am totally hooked. I have a two foot community fish tank. In it I have a couple of female guppies, some silver and some wagtail platies, 8 glowlight tetra, 2 medium size bristlenoses, one half-grown and one fully grown molly and one male blue betta. It's a little overcrowded at the moment since the little platies and guppies are getting good at hiding and are getting too big to get eaten. I have another little tank which is getting set up at the moment. The betta is going in there. (he's having relationship issues with the bigger platies and molly) Actually, it's just an excuse for another fish tank. I've been lurking for the past couple of days, as I was finishing off my last couple of NCEA Level 3 exams.
