I find that many LFS lack in up to date reefing / marine information and it is best to seek advice online and through other reef / marine specific forums. If I had ever only gone to buy everything and listen to everything from the lfs id end up broke and in debt trying to buy everything they suggested to deal with this and that, upgrading equipment which they said should be good and in the end Id have a damn fugly reef tank. Puttputt has had one of the best reef tanks in the country with many years of experience, im surprised you didnt take his advice any sooner :facepalm: Rant over, and back to some sound advice, Id strongly recommend going with a skimmer thats rated for twice your water volume. With a 450L tank, take into account glass thickness, rock, sand volume and displacement you will not end up with 450L. It is hard to overskim, but do not buy two skimmers, thats twice the cleaning and double the amount of things which could go wrong, do it once and do it right. If you manage to fit in a sump and with a budget of $300 id say go for a NAC6A or better yet, spend an extra $50 and get the NAC7 it is a highly rated skimmer.

Not so sure if id put aqua one and marine in the same sentence. What is the cost of one of their skimmers? As Puttputt mentioned have a look at bubble magus on http://www.deepblueaquarium.co.nz, they are a quality skimmer at a very good price. Ive had 3 myself with various setups and not 1 problem with any of them. If there are specialised marine shops in Christchurch id recommend taking a look around there and having a chat with them reg a setup. For a decent 4foot setup id recommend a budget of 3-4k. That includes live rock too. Have a look around on the forums there are always people breaking down tanks and swapping out equipment / live & dead rock.

What he said ^^ Dont need to wade through any surf, just head to the takapuna boat ramp, you can collect from either side of the ramp without getting wet.

No not really, because for the same price as the deltec i got alot of other goodies. I may not be getting enough flow to my skimmer from the overflow feed. Would i be happier with a deltec over a RO - yes

Well to be honest ive been really busy lately and havent had time to dose or test. After we discussed this, i was just doing the 2 part as the tank didnt seem to suck up that much Ca or Kh. Time to have a test.......... will report back.

Candy your stressing me out :lol: Main thing is that you probably need to have some new saltwater ready for the transfer. Mix up or get some Natural salt water from takapuna - about 40 - 60L and have this ready a ONE DAY in advance just incase. If you mix up salt, mix it a day or 2 in advance and make sure the salinity is correct. If you get NSW then you need to get it 2 hours before the high tide, and on a good day where it hasnt rained within the 2 days prior of collection. Most auckland reefers get theirs from the Takapuna boat ramp. As for the coral, if you have a poly box, put the coral rock in there, and some possibly need to be baged. Some can be transported in the poly box if the trip isnt too long.

Ok, problem, such a slow drip rate via gravity is very very inconsistant. Back to the drawing board, looks like its going to be dosing pump or a reactor......... I dont want to have to test daily and dose manually.

hmmm maybe its not dissolving because i dont have enough water in there? I was trying to dissolve 300g in 1L then add it to my 4L container. Thoughts? Otherwise im just gona add it in and it can just sit on the bottom.

um, doesnt work, theres no lumpy bits left, but it all just settles on the bottom, a very thick layer of it 300grams. Any other ways?
