GeeTee
I've had some glass in my shed for a while and have decided to do something with it. I've tried to make sense of the calculations of glass thickness for a tank but it is all to confusing. So figuring this is the easy way out will ask your opinions. The glass is laminated 6.2mm and I have it cut already for the tank to be 80wx40dx55h cm.(odd size but thats the size of the glass) The only concern is the height.I already have a tank that is 80wx40dx40h made from the same glass. So is it going to be to risky to be that high or shoud I cut it down?
alanmin4304
Taking into account that the glass is laminated and therefore less than 6.2mm in total I think it would be far too high. I have 10mm unlaminated on my 500mm high tanks ( and braced as well)
GeeTee
Might try for the standard 46cm perhaps.
alanmin4304
I would run a 50mm strap right around the top even then.
GeeTee
What do you mean by strap, made from what? My original tank is 80x40x40 and it has been fine for over 12 months now, same glass.
alanmin4304
It is just a matter of personal preference but I would put a 50mm strap of glass around the top to reinforce and take the flex out of the top of the tank. You can put glass lids on top of that and they will finish level with the top of the tank if you put the strap about 10 mm down from the top. alanmin4304
You would be best to use non laminated on the straps as the water can get between the layers.
