Kim&Dan
Ok, I am sure this has been asked before but the search funtion doesn't work ... :-? We have been very successfull at breeding livebearers but seem to struggle with any type of egglayer (apart from an adult Kribensis pair) so far. I have read around the different species we're trying to breed and we're doing everything right... The only two things that are not by the book: 1. We have quite a lot of snails in our tanks and I am starting to think that they eat the eggs (if there are any). 2. We don't keep the fishes in species only tanks. Seems obvious but the snail issue only popped into my head the other day - any help / opinions / experiences regarding breeding egglayers with snails in the tank and / or in community tanks would be greatly appreciated As an example: We have had 4 Danios for half a year and did not have a single baby yet. For 2 months they were all by themselves in a tank with large pebbles (to make the eggs fall in between), fed right and in good water conditions. The girls had very large bellies at times but no babies or eggs have been seen so far... Any ideas?
Billaney
Hi The danios will eat there own eggs as quick as they can scatter them unless there stopped, try making the tank bare bottomed and having the adults in a breeding basket, Home make ones from netting or bought ones work well ) This always works for me and i have a high baby count whenever i try this, Snails are a possablity but with danios at least you would have to have a heck of a lot of snals as they can drop 100's of eggs per female. MarkLB
Hi K&D, I lost some cichlid eggs to snails a few months ago. I'd get as many snails out of the tank as possible...a couple is cool but too many is too many.
Kim&Dan
... try ... having the adults in a breeding basket, Home make ones from netting or bought ones work well... Thanks for your reply I was wondering what these baskets look like. Are they the same as the breeding trap for livebearers, ie with two sloped funnel-like things to protect the babies? I couldn't find any instructions online to make one either... Hi K&D, I lost some cichlid eggs to snails a few months ago. Thanks for that too We have now started removing some of the snails and have also bought two clown loaches
