Fishkeepa
HI Eveyone I've measured up the available space in my house (My parents house would be more correct) and I am going to save up for a new tank (i have limited funds now) :bounce: . I'm thinking of getting it made by the Port Nicholson Glass guys as i cant find any around to suit what I want. It will be 90cm=L x 45cm=W and 60cm high. It will be a tropical planted freshwater and I have a few questions :-? 1) Will the Port Nicholson Guys no what glass thickness it should be? 2) Does any one know roughly what it will cost? - I'm gonna ring and see if i can get an amount from them 3) It will be roughly 180-190L what filtration will i be looking at? Will a large internal do or should i go for a small external + UG or even wet dry. Also i currently have a 75L on a flat based cabinet. There is an identical cabinet currently not being used and together they could fit the aquarium on it could this be used or do i need a stand? I would put a wooden board over them and make sure it was level. Thanks for your help. :bounce:
Pawz
Hi ya, Just a suggestion have you tried Hutt Pets? They always have plain glass tanks. Thats where I got my 160L from. Roughly 80x40x50 (lxwxh) for $130. Actually thats where all 5 of my tanks have come from. But the other four are all in one jobs. (2x jebos, 1 aquafun and a AA) Not sure if its what your after but worth a looksie. Ainz
suphew
Pete will charge about $1 per liter, he knows what size glasss etc to make it out of, he will also make a stand pretty cheaply as will. IMHO external canister filter is always the way to go, on just about anysize tank, unless you drill it build a sump and put in a trickle filter. Of course it depends a little on what you are planning to keep.
Fishkeepa
i looked around both animates and animalz mirimar. The lady at animalz said a 100L tank was $100 dollars and said if i got it done through Port N Glass it would be cheaper. But i'll give hut pets a call to see what they have What type of external canister filters are best. I've seen lots of different ones. are any superior? or are there any that people comonly have problems with? Thanks for your help
suphew
Pete makes the tank for a lot (most) of the shops in the lower north island. Check out hutt pet for filters they seem to be the cheapest shop (IMO). getting them off the web can be good, but I hate having to wait  I use Fluval 204's, not had a problem with them and am happy to reccomend them. Haven't used any others.
Faran
Everyone has given you great advice so far but I wanted to head out on a bit of a tangent. You say you want a planted tank 60cm tall. There's a slight problem with this as standard fluoros don't penetrate that deep very well. I recommend going no deeper than 45cm (unless you want to spend more than your whole setup costs on a MH light). Mind you, this is if you want to have ground cover plants. If you just want regular medium to tall plants only you should be fine once they've grown a little.
Pawz
If you do ring Hutt Pets ask for Ben. He's really onto his fish stuff.
alanmin4304
Blue and kim is right on to it with the height. If you have the right light for a 300mm high tank, you will need 10 times as much for a 600mm, not twice as much.
Fishkeepa
Currently i have a tall 35x35x60 tank and am not using fluros but the energy saving bulbs - an idea whetu gave. I have had great plant growth with them so would i be able to continue using these? Thanks everybody :bounce:
SpidersWeb
As for filter, Jebo 819 at Hutt Pets, price is about $150 from memory. I also have an 810 which cost about $130. Damn cheap and they are really good. Haven't had a single problem with mine. The 819 is huge and has 5 big trays and pumps a LOT of water. You don't get the special features like 'self-start' or the ability to remove trays individually, but when you're on a budget those are unessecary luxuries. I have a Jebo 810 + 900l/hr powerhead on one of my 225L tanks, and a 819 on the other. I use the powerhead in the first tank for additional circulation rather than actual filtering though. Although I've been told not to touch Jebo heaters. Heard there has been lots of reports of them leaking and for one person it caught fire inside the tube. That kind of sucks though because they were easily adjustable and had the gauge (albeit not calibrated).
Fishkeepa
Animates had the fluval 204 on special last month - bugger missed out but otherwise the jebo's sound pretty good. Animates has an aqua day on the 15th of july so i might wait till then cos they said lots of stuff will be on special. Is it 1 watt per litre when it comes to the heater
