I know the little corner filters that you fill with dacron are mechanical filters and the external cannister filters are biological, with an element of mechanical filtration. If I wanted to have one of the small internal corner filters running in a tank just so I could then use it to instantly cycle a new tank, would it work to fill it with ceramic noodles? I am curious because I want to put one in the back corner of my L shaped tank, and it would be really difficult to get to if I had to change the dacron frequently. Maybe with noodles it would become more biological than mechanical and I wouldn't have to constantly rinse out filthy dacron. They're actually both mechanical and biological filters Mechanical = takes visible stuff out of water Biological = "cycles" ammonia out of water, turning it into nitrite/nitrate. The corner filters filled with filter wool still work as a biological filter. And yes, you can put noodles in it if you wish, it just won't be a very good mechanical filter then (which may not be an issue given your goal).
