i have just found around 35, one and a half month old baby BN's dead. 5 others were still alive. they were floating in a breeding trap in a 100L tank which only has:

Breeding pair of BN

11 guppys

And 15 other babys from the previous spawn

All other fish are fine

Water Params:

Ph 6 (dont know why it is so low but has been like this for ages)

Nitrite 0.50 (this may be the killer???)

Ammonia 0

Nitrate 10

Nothing too servere i thought.

Yesterday i did the usual water change.

Yesterday night i gave them a new piece of cucumber

Tonight they were belly up, DEAD

Any reasons why you think they would have died??

Lots of possibilities, no way to know for sure.

Possibly the water change was a bit too much stress for them, water temp off, too much chlorine etc.

Possibly there were traces of pesticides on the cucumber.

Maybe someone walked past the tank in a grumpy mood.

The water change was nothing out of the ordinary, put the correct amount of stress coat in, water temp.... it was a guess but i thougt very good :D

Quite possibly but the older baby BN in the same tank were munching the same cucumber....

Maybe someone walked past the tank in a grumpy mood.

Only me and my mum live in the house, everybody else is at uni etc. not possible that one, mum loves the fish and has her own....

Thanks for the reply ira

ive always heard baby BN are pretty delicate so my guess is the nitrites were part of it, perhaps the cucumber made the water funny? how long did you leave it in for?

we have very low kh here, perhaps its a possibility your ph crashed?

i have had this happen once..i thought it was because i ddnt have enough air comming into the tank. I say this because after i collected all the dead fry i saw the parents comming up for air..after that i put an air stone in..

conclusion was that the young were not able to swim upto the top to get air.

Another thing is that you did a waterchange which should have given fresh oxygen to the tank :o plus they were in a breeding trap too

well there is air going into the tank for the sponge filter so i dont think it was that as a ll other fish were acting fine

I am coming to think that it was the cucumber that did it...

Nothing else that i can think of that could of done it

Owell... they will spawn again (hopefully)

Was there air going into main tank?, maybe the tank was fine but not for the trap

I would leave the food in for 12hrs max

The air bubble things or air driven filters make almost no difference to the O2 in the water, to do this you need surface water movement. Often bubblers seem to work but this is because they are making the water surface move. Did you have any water flow in the breeding trap?also how warm do you keep the room? If the tank is warmer because you have the heating cranked up this will lower the O2 in the water as well.

Anyway theres not really any way to know if O2 was the problem, I have found that BN babies don't usually survive moving tanks, so I assume can't handle any changes in water parameters, it could be something like your using a gas heater which is putting CO2 into the air which is getting into the tank changing the PH, maybe with the rain the water company has added extra chloride to the tap water?? could be lots of things..
