lorrainel
hi all i'm having a bit of an issue at the moment. I've still got ich in my tank! it disappeared about 2 1/2 wks ago, (after i raised temp to 29-30 degrees and added salt as per ppl's suggestions) and then few days later it came back! I've had 2 clowns who've persistently got the whitespots for the last 2 wks, no resolution - they are eating normally and acting normally and don't seem bothered by it at all, but last week i lost a blue ram who had the spots for 2 days and then promptly died. after that death i started to panick and so dosed my tank with Wunder white spot cure (malachite green) as per the instructions (1mL per 20L then 1mL per 40L after 3 days). Its been 1 1/2 wks since i started treatment but the white spots are still present on 2 of my clowns (not the other 2). And now my 2nd blue ram has today developed white spots and has been v listless with clamped fins! I'm frantic with worry! i've isolated the sick ram in one of the livebearer containers as thie other fishies seem to be picking on him. what should i do??? sharn
my guess is the treatment didnt last long enough the first time. clowns and rams are sensitive fish, with clowns being prone to WS so thats why they would still have it the cysts can remain unhatched for a few days, with the freeswimmers still free swimming trying to find a host, thats why keeping treatment up for a week or two after is your best bet to try and knock it right back down. pehaps a nice water change and another dose of meds might help (perhaps using the 1ml per 20L for a bit longer might help) to try and get it off them for good, make sure you give the susbstrate a good cleaning as thats where the cysts are. if your clowns are still looking happy theres a good chance you can get rid of it again, not too sure about the ram, i suppose just keeping the water nice is all you can do. i hope he gets better. good luck! Caryl
If I remember rightly, this was a newly set up tank wasn't it and fish were added fairly quickly? White spot is usually a result of poor water conditions and I suspect if you tested your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels you would see the problem. The fish will continue to get the disease until the underlying cause corrects itself ie the tank fully cycles and, in the case of the clowns, matures further as well. Clowns need excellent water conditions and will get white spot at the drop of a hat!
Caper
Plus, you have to treat the tank for at least another 2-3 days AFTER the spots are no longer visible on the fishies. I've always done that as that's what is recommended and have been successful with it going! *omg...runs and knocks on wood*
