Liam_Beavis
I would Like to get some ideas on building Fish Tanks. If anyone can help please do so.
Oscar Sheila
How big are you thinking? If it is under or around 100L you could give it a go yourself. But if you have never built a tank before and you want something bigger, I'd get it custom made. Where are you from by the way?
Pegasus
Hi Liam, Nice to see you here. Welcome to the New Zealand Fishroom. Plenty of things to keep your interest.
Pies
I built a 700ltr fish tank, with corner overflows, and holes drilled into the bottom plane just recently. Although its gone 'ok' and I am quite proud of it. After all the mucking around, time etc it prolly worked out more expensive than having one made. If you are in Wellington I can put you in touch with a professional tank builder, and the person I am using to build my next tank. That being said if you HAVE to build it yourself, its quite easy, just messy and awkward! Pies
peety
same story for me, I built my first sump in ply, coated it with watersafe epoxy. Since it was so fiddly I took it to the local tank maker, and found out they could build it for 1/2 as much as I spent.... They get glass in stuff cheap...let them do it.... Matthew
peety who is the tank maker. I want a four or five foot tank but would like to get it as cheap as poss. I also have some specifics for it, which I would prefer to talk to the tank maker rather than go through the LFS
peety
Tough Tanks Factory 6/42 Henderson Valley Road, Henderson 835-1451. There's a really nice lady there that does the work. You should see how many tanks they have lying around ....ahhh bliss.... I got her number from LFS and reckon her prices are amazing.
peety
Ooops, Oh yeah, the bottom of the tanks are tinted glass (good for BB tanks since no reflection) and tinted glass is cheaper, so if you building sump, tell her and she will use tinted glass saving mo bucks... Matthew
I think I have already used one of her tanks through the LFS, I quite liked the tinted glass at the bottom, as you say great for BB tanks. I must pay her a visit and check out what she has got. I appreciate you letting me know. Matt

peety
Bare Bottom  The black glass stops the fish from getting a relection and freaking... good for breeding since you vaccum the bottom every day...
Caryl
Oh of course! Duh!! I was thinking breeding but couldn't think what the other B was for.
Interfecus
Roughly what sort of prices could you expect to pay for small tanks (in the range of 100L) at a place like this?
peety
You have to call them with your dimensions.... I had some extra deep ones built which required thicker glass, hence dearer. From memory my small tanks (breeding) were 40cm x 50cmx 70cm long and cost fifty something, they're about 140 litres, but little ones like 100 would use even thinner glass than that... I know for a fact that LFS just get standard sizes in and add 50% and flog em off. They all depend upon your dimensions... she goes away, figures out glass thickness required, then phones back with a quote. They have a nifty triangular one too that sits in the corner...
