you didn't add him to soon did you....let him float in the bag for awhile(1hour)then add tank water to the bag just a little bit at a time over another hour, don't know weather its right but my two are sweet

inverts are very susceptible (more so than fish) to changes, especially temperature changes (but also salinity) NEVER expost them to the air, always ensure they're submerged in the water.

next time, float the bag for 10-15 minutes then add about 1/4 of the volume of the water in the bag with water from your tank. repeat the same amount about 10 minutes later then again in another 10. then, open the bag under the water (try not to let any of that water into your tank) and let him out (again, without exposing them to the air!!!)

Sorry, about your shrimp. A few weeks ago I got 2 yellow banded shrimps of which I hoped they were a pair but clairly not. Not good to lose something so soon.

Surpised to hear that you can't have then for shrt moments in the air. My aquarium has an overflow with a lid on it with 2 narrow gaps for the water to flow. It seems that the yellow banded shrimp is a real night shrimp and hides with the first sign of light so I keep checking every morning if he is still there. Twice he wasn't and I looked al over the aquarium to finally find him, by pure luck being, being stuck in the overflow (tail sticking out in the air). Pulled him by the tail out of the overflow back in the tank. Hope he finally has learned his lesson. But no harm to the shrimp at all.

Jeroen.

lol... my salinity was at 1.028 - 1.029 before too and swing arm gave me wrong readings. But my cleaner and fire shrimp were fine under these salinity. I got my refractometer cheap... $50 if i remember, i had a mate from HK who brought it over for me.

lowered from 1.029 to 1.028 over the last two days.

What is the maximum amount of freash water you can add per day to a 230lt tank to lower the salinity safely?

Do I have to wait for the salinity to be correct to do a water change?

Thanks Shane

You can safely lower at 0.001 per day. Do a water change whenever just be aware that NSW @ Takapuna is typically higher than usual, I think its around 1.026 so add a correct percentage of RODI as well as the NSW.

if your salinity hits around 1.030 or higher you'll definately have coral death so consider yourself lucky to find it before it got too bad!

yeah always got some frags to sell :D not too many now though, sam (xyzz) came over last night and bought a few. also not too many lps/softies anymore, since they're typically slower growers than sps, what i do have i dont want to part with. i have 3 x various sps on a piece of flat live rock, all about the size of ya thumb that i might sell for the right price. was going to put them on trademe but before i do, if you are keen (or if you're not keen but anyone else is) let me know.

also, since there are a few of us around hibiscus coast area, Im keen on buying a small trailer and welding a tank to it. Quite an expense to say the least so would deliver water for a small fee 8) let me know if you'd be interested in getting water dropped off :D Im gonna start hunting for a trailer now anyways.

I have a real tidy Briford enclosed trailer that might fit your tank in it. Its my work trailer but I only use the racks on top for extension ladders ect. whats the dimensions of the tank? and I'll measure up.

Hold on to those frags and I'll pop round mid week if it suits. Do you want a purple finger leather frag, has three 2 inch branches. At no cost of course, i've got heaps!

ohh and if the tank wont fit we could make a trailer easy as.

dimensions are 1000 x 1200 for the 1,000 litre tank. issue is whether the suspension will hold a tonne so would have to be heavy duty leaf springs. maybe on the purple leather, trying to go more sps but if its nice enough i'd be keen, cheers :D pm me. im up north half this week back thursday so thurs night would be ok.

cant find tape measure so I'll get back to you on dimensions buy it would likely fit. Old mans a mechanic so I'll ask him about max weight load on springs. Load specs might be on tags so I'll post you tomorrow & I'll throw the frag on TM :D
