evilknieval69
hey ageing water overnight in buckets so i can do water changes of around 200L just isnt practicle, so... I thought that if i got one of these i could stick it out in the garage to store water. i would put a heater in it to get the temp up to the same as the tanks and i thought i would put an air pump in it to move the water round/airate it. I told sharn my idea and she said that a normal air pump wouldnt be able to do it and suggested a powerhead. so, after re-thinking, i have decided that i should put a powerhead in it, which i can then use to pump water out of it when i need it!!! im guessing a few people already have this setup, so, is there anything else that would be handy to use with it?? any comments on this idea?? thanks **EVIL** :bounce:
Luke*
That's ideal. Add peat in a stocking to give your fish a present. It lasts about a month. It should get them breeding too If your air pump is strong enough to turn the water over so it's consistently heated and aerated it'd be alright
Faran
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-farmi ... 566123.htm would be my suggestion for a water container. With some proper shopping around you can get one for $50 to $100 - it holds 5x as much and even has a tap on the bottom.
evilknieval69
umm yea...but i dont have huge (and many) tanks like you blue...HAHAHA yea that would be good but i wouldnt need that amount of water...the 200L would do me...and would be easier to sneak into a gap in the garage thanks **EVIL** :bounce:
Quark_VI
If you know any dairy farmers in the area you could get the grey drum as a freebie - not sure what they usually contain but most dairy farms seem to have a few. Otherwise ask for one of the old blue 200l barrels that contain acid wash, teat spray etc. Get an acid wash one if possible as it is very easy to clean, the teat spray and alkali ones need a lot more rinsing as their contents are not as water soluble. Also these don't have the screw lid's just two screw in bungs on top. I have seen the container's suggested by BlueandKim used to hold old cooking oil which are also sometimes on farms as the oil is mixed with some stock feeds. I have used the blue drums in the past and just dropped a small/cheap powerhead through the bung or used a good old syphon. Didn't bother with continuous aeration or a heater. Dark
those drums are ideal for lots of things - water storage, daphnia bins, bulk gravel storage. you might be able to get one from a place that sells livestock feed - Sharpies in Lower Hutt has had them in the past. 'Food grade' is good. 'Previously used for toxic chemicals and radioactive substances' is bad. (talk about stating the obvious!) if i had room, i would plumb one up with a float valve, overflow, auto doser for water ager, aeration, in-line heater... and UV sterilizer just to be sure... actually i would probably do a couple linked together... try to mount it somewhere up high so you can drain water into your tanks, thus making it easier for your powerhead if you even need to use one. one of our club members has three outside for daphnia - occasionally they have to be emptied and washed out to get rid of the accumulated leaves and algae and so on... i don't know if you would run into this indoors, but it might pay to think about how you would go about overhauling it if the need ever arose (radioactive possums falling in the water tank?) too late at night for more inspiration...
