Blue-faced Agassizi

2fishy

Recommended Posts

I had a pair of batchlers in a 3 foot tank then had to be transferd into the 2 foot tank. They were always housed with my agasazi trio and found them alright. The fact that there were 2 boys ment they did pick on eachother but otherwise were fine with the rest of the fish.

Hi All,

I am always ready to be corrected when I am wrong, and also I like to think a "Thankyou" is in order when I am right.

FACTS;

I have been an avid "DWARF CICHLID" Fan for many years and followed the discovery of new species with some eagerness.

The names that I find the Local Fish shops are giving these new Apisto's is a complete and utter shambles to say the least. There appear to be that many "BLUE FACE" apisto's available that the only way you can be sure (MAYBE) of the true species is to get the Importation Documents..

I have seen Blue Faced Borelli; Blue Faced Aggassizi; Blue Faced McMasteri.

I brought a "PAIR" of so called "Blue Faced A. aggassizi" in Nelson, and I bought a "PAIR" of "Blue Faced A. borelli in Christchurch.

When I put then into a "BEAKER" to have a close look at them, YOU GUESSED IT, they are all the same.

On further investigation I have now found that they are in fact Apistogramma inconspicua.

So dont be misled and hand over good dollars for the same fish with a different name in different shops

I suppose being relitivly new to the whole cichlid species I just assumed that the Apistogramma inconspicua was what 2fishy was refering to. That's what I had had, bought as "blue steels" off of Shae. I just found all though they were perfectly fine fish, I preferd the agasazi's that I had and didn't like to see the poor batchlors hastleing eachother.

the Blue-faced Agassizis I was talking about are indeed apistogramma inconspicua (as indicated by the supplier.

Antwan saw them and told me they werent agassizis.

So I did some research.

the inconspicua isnt blue. (well in the photos they dont look like it)

and the one exactly like the one i have is apistogramma agassizi - blue faced variety.

So which one is it???????

How much do these usually retail for?

male agassizis have very distinctive tails, almost like the flame off a candle, the conspicua have very non agassizi like tails lol but like most apistos the females look real similar. youd have to sex them probably to know which type they are if your unsure (ant would be good at this probably)

note the third photo in the top row, thats sort of blue? http://images.google.co.nz/images?hl=en ... a=N&tab=wi.

in shop tanks fish are normally highly stressed from shipment, people passing by and those annoying little kids tapping on the glass, incorrect tank mates and decor etc etc which would be why the are not showing their colours their best.

most of the normal apistos around here go for approx 20-40 dollars, 40+ is for the higher quality but most average around 30 for sexable.

p.s. i owned that lutino oscar in animal antics, had to give her up cause man was she a biartch!

Hi All

There certainly is confusion over the "BLUE FACED" Dwarfs.

I have only just got back from Christchurch and put my purchases in a Tank (Brown Discus, I loathe the new colour strains) and got on here.

The word amongst the Dealers is that the market IS FLOODED with "Apistogramma inconspicua" thanks to Highway Fisheries wanting to get rid of them, and calling them BLUE FACED Aggassizi.

The shops are buying them wholesale for about $4.75 + GST and they are being retailed for $15.00 to $17.50 each.

True Aggassizi retail for about $40.00, and they dont look anything like inconspicua.
