Caper
The new(used) tank that I bought came with a Tetra Whisper filter. It has 2 sides for the filter media. I was changing the water tonight when I noticed that the water was also flowing out the section where the intake tube goes in. Now I have that problem with one of my other filters (posted in another forum) and despite all the excellent recommendations it is still doing it. Does this mean the filter is not working properly? It has a control knob on the the top of the intake tube & I played with that to see if it would make a difference but I'd almost have to stop the water flow altogether to stop it from flowing down the intake tube section. Another thing, it is loud. Now, I read somewhere here... don't remember where...that a loud filter could mean something is wrong. I think it read trouble with the impeller, not sure! Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated oh wise fishy people
JoandWilly
We had the same problem with our whisper filter of the water going back out over the intake pipe, to solve this we took out the filter wool bag that you use in it and just replaced it with normal filter foam, its not as fine and doesnt get clogged up as easy with stuff, the main problem is restictions from things getting dirty. As for it being noisy, ours was fair quiet but it did "whisper" if its getting rattly, you may need to replace the impeller.
whetu
Yeah, the overflow back into the tank is due to the water not being able to get through your filter media. So it either needs cleaning or replacing. As for the noise, I used to find that whwen I took my whisper apart for a really thorough clean, sometimes it rattled when I put it back together. Start by making sure everything is tight and well seated and see if that fixes the rattle. Otherwise it could well be the impellor - either imbalanced or worn. I've found my whisper really good. Had it for many many years and it's still going strong.
Caper
Thanks all Ummm...brain dead tonight...I've only had the tank for 2 weeks and I did replace the carbon and the white filter...hmmm I think I did that the night I got it and cleaned the filter itself it was quite scummy! The noise isn't a rattly sound...its more like a....loud whisper :-? to solve this we took out the filter wool bag that you use in it and just replaced it with normal filter foam So you're not using carbon then? What do you mean by "normal filter foam"? In regard to the control valve, if that's what you call it. How do I know if its...oh, how to describe...in the right place? Can you tell an impeller is bad just by looking at it? Also, as long as the water is running down the proper way (the 2 sides), does it matter that its going down the intake valve too? Caper
Anybody, comments on the last list of my questions (above)  please The first time I changed the filter, it was as if all the carbon just fell to the bottom of the bag; last week, it was more like it was in the middle section of the bag! The water continues to come out of the proper areas as well as flowing down the intake section...does this mean it is still doing what it is supposed to do???????????? It is really loud, and you said that indicates a bad impeller...     well, that means a new filter probably, because the chances of me getting a new impeller around here are slim to none  Anybody
whetu
The water continues to come out of the proper areas as well as flowing down the intake section...does this mean it is still doing what it is supposed to do???????????? Well, the water that is going through the filter is getting filtered, and the water that is going out the intake isn't! So if you're happy with the filtering (ie your water is staying fairly clear and your nitrogen cycle is all still healthy) then you'll probably be fine the way things are. It is really loud, and you said that indicates a bad impeller...     well, that means a new filter probably, because the chances of me getting a new impeller around here are slim to none  I'm still not quite clear what the "really loud" noise is... Is it the sound of the water running back into the tank? If so, raise the water level in the tank until it gets quieter. If that's not it can you describe the noise in more detail? Caper
Thanks whetu I did email the company, they told me to take the impeller apart by removing one of the end caps, remove the plastic impeller and maganet and give it a good cleaning check for an chips or damages...and if that didn't work, get back to them. When I took the first cap off, there were...like fine hair-like threads around the metal shaft. I couldn't see this before when I was cleaning it, but then I wasn't taking it apart (didn't know you good  ), it was near the end cap that goes into the tube. But once I saw this, I took the other end cap off as well, but it was clear. The loud noise was more like a *hmmm* a loud humming :-? Anway, you can barely hear it now Yeah, the overflow back into the tank is due to the water not being able to get through your filter media. So it either needs cleaning or replacing. The overflow, never used that word before in fishy land, is still happening, although I don't find it as much as before. Testing the water, everything is fine *OH NO, I hope I haven't jinxed myself*. I believe my water is clear, I know it sounds silly but the reason I say that is: I don't have a background on this tank because of where it is sitting. Part of it, you see my blue wall, & the top part you see my kitchen. JoandWilly, ah: we took out the filter wool bag that you use in it and just replaced it with normal filter foam I don't know what you mean by "normal filter foam"
