Armitage
Hey guys, cheers for reading my thread ! Im new to the saltwater thing, i bought a skimmer a few days ago and have set it up and is now running. is there a waiting period before it starts to froth up and produce skimmate? the water is a new mix so im wondering if the salt mix needs to throughly do its thing first. Its a queen skimmer on a 1100 l/h pump. The man at the pet store runs them on his tanks and reccomended it for simplicity and reliabiltiy. at the moe the bubbles hit the surface in the skimmer and just pop pretty quick. cheers all
suphew
Yes new skimmer scan take a week or two to start working, some times they foam like mad other times produce nothing. It's partly to do with the skimmer needing to build up a coat of slime inside and also might be because new water has stuff in it that stops the foam. Bugger my mind has gone blank, but some one well remember what it is and what its for. Update your profile so we know where you are, makes live easier if you need some one to help you out, or swap frags, and just because I'm nosy
ghostface
aah the mighty queen skimmer..... it may pay to get a stronger pump to run it - i was using a queen skimmer with an 1300LPH pump for ages, and it was basically skimming nothing - i upgraded to a 2600lph pump and it produced about 4 times more bubbles. you can still use the 1100lph pump as a powerhead inside the tank. i still have 3 queen skimmers in the garden shed
Armitage
Cheers for the mighty quick replies. Im using IO salt mix as well if that helps. suphew- ive updated the best i can ! haha. Ill wait a week or two before i start to get worried, ive heard of the slime thing before and my tank looks pretty sterile, perhaps it needs a bio-load or something before it foams up. Ghost face- with the 2600 lph pump did you have any issues at all? ill keep an eye out for a better pump, as i need some anyway to get a good flow through the tank. Also, does the length of tubing taking water from tank to the skimmer affect it at all ? i know that the height affects it but im not to sure on the sideways. sweet cheers for the clues. ghostface
no issues with the bigger pump - you do need to adjust the height of water in the skimmer though so as not to skim too wet. the length of tubing will make a small difference horizontally, but i wouldnt worry too much about it if its under 1 metre or so..
