Euthanaesia of my Oscar

 Hi I am new to this site, and was browsing last night and found a discussion on the kindest way to put fisheys to sleep. (for the life of me I can't find it now). There were many replies on Clove Oil, Benzocaine, etc - knocking him on head or freezing. I had to take one of my dogs to the Vet tonight so asked her about the above drugs. She was not happy with the Clove Oil method and others weren't available to the public. So tomorrow I am taking my Oscar (who by the way seems to have a rupture under his tummy and is not looking very well) to her and she is going to put aneasthetic in his water to gently put him to sleep. I feel happier about this and don't mind paying the vet fees.

This is a great site and I can see I will have many more questions on what to put in with my 12" Pleco when he's on his own.

there is a way of putting your fish to sleep before you kill it.

Put clove oil (i think about a teaspoon) into a cup or bowl with a little water. Put the fish into that and wait a few minutes. Your fish will be outcold.

Then you can pierce its head and do the deed.

It will feel nothing.

Sorry about your fish.

Thanks Kookie for your help, but he's 10" long so might have a bit of trouble squishing him in a small bowl or cup, ha ha. If he he'd been a small fish I wouldn't be quite so attached, but he really is one of my pets. :(

oh dear, i have an oscar so i know what you mean by pet, putting one of them down is like putting your cat or dog down  its good that your going to make a effort to put it down though, big fish that would hard to knock on the head and who could do that to a oscar anyway right? be strong (dude? dudette?) and i feel for ya *hugs*

:o Thanks to you all for making me feel welcome.

As soon as I saw your name Lindyloo I reckonised you as the person how had written the article I was looking for, thankyou.

Pegasus - sorry about the lack of info on me, it took me long enough to work out how to join up (blonde hair). I have added more now.

Sharn, thanks for your thoughts but you won't believe it. I sterilized a small carry tank last night with salt and threw some in his tank, and he has been swimming around all day instead of gasping at bottom of tank. I didn't have the heart to take him to vet (it's as if he knew) so I am closely watching him.

Will keep you all informed :)

not sure if were allowed to post links on this site so admins please delete if im not allowed, www.theoscarspot.com has heaps of stuff and alot of them are from world cichlids.

are you sure hes not constipated? epsom salts and peas might get things moving if you suspect that but salting the tank (1 tbsp per 20L) can help relieve stress, they are hardy buggers so dont give up!

Hi Gizmo,

Great to hear, your Oscar has found a new Lease of Life, :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Hmmm, maybe he knew what was around the corner do you think.:wink: You'll probably find the Salt that you added to the tank has done wonders, just hoping it stays that way. :D:D

Keep us posted on how he's doing.

Posted a message in my hello page by mistake, so letting you all now that poor Rupert the Oscar has an appointment at the vet tomorrow. I thought he was getting better, but has gone down hill again. Thankyou for all the help - I feel like I have signed his death warrant but at least he won't be suffering anymore.:cry::cry::cry:

Ohh Gizmo,

Really, Sorry to hear that Ruperts health has deteriated, and that an appointment has been made to see the Vet.:cry::cry:

Just remember, sometimes we have to do these things, too help our little Fishy Friends out, far better for him to go this way, than to suffer A.

My thoughts are with u at this very sad time.:cry::cry:

The horrid deed has been done. I'm very sad but also relieved that Rupert is not in anymore pain. The Vet was lovely, she gave him back to me wrapped up in a Teddybear towel with fresh cut roses on top, inside the container he went in, (as Sharn said) toThe Great Fish Pond in the Sky.:(

A big thanks once again for all your help and kindness. You will now find me in the Beginners Forum asking for advice on what to do next. Maybe you could help.

Gizmo...so sad to hear about Rupert...but you know, taking him to the vet and having him "go to sleep" shows just how much you loved your fishy...with so many people being cruel to their "beloved" pets with starving them, beating them and such...I congratulate you on taking the best care you could of Rupert :bow:

Hi there gizmo,

Am sorry to hear about the oscar.

If you require a fish anaesthetic (for handling your fish) in future visit www.aqui-s.com where you will find good info on the subject. AQUI-S NZ Ltd produce the only registered fish anaesthetic in NZ. The anaesthetic is also food grade (registered with zero withholding period) so many fish farms/fish keepers will use it for humane slaughter purposes, as well as general handling procedures like grading, weight checks.

Thanks - Ben
