jacket
I am unsure of what to do to keep my tank clean? Changeing water how much and how often? The brownish stuff that grows in the tank - what is it -what to do about it -how to aviod it? Why is there an oily film on the surface of the water? I have a tank with an under gravel filter and it has two axolotyls in it. Thanks
dogmatix
Oil on suface, remove with papper towels, it is from food what brand are u feeding them ? Axos are messy, try 2*20% h2o changes each week, you cant put any catfish in as they will get eaten so u must wipe diatoms off with algae pad, wipe with pad then do h2o change also make sure you use a gravel syphon

The big things are feeding appropriate amounts of suitable food, removing any uneaten food and water changes to dilute waste. What sized tank? > Changeing water how much and how often? With Axolotls, 50% a week wouldn't hurt but it depends on the tank size (ie if it's a 6ft tank then its less important than with a 2ft tank given the same amount of Axolotl and food). > The brownish stuff that grows in the tank - what is it -what > to do about it -how to aviod it? Is this growing as a film on the glass and gravel? If so, it's probably 'diatoms' or 'brown algae'. Generally it's a sign of insufficient light and/or water changes. > Why is there an oily film on the surface of the water? What are you feeding? I've seen some 'trout pellet' style foods cause this sort of thing especially in a cold water tank. I've also seen it in turtle tanks where food with a high fat content is being fed. Earthworms are good Axolotl food, it might be worth starting up a worm farm... Hope that helps. Give us a few more details and we may be able to offer some more suggestions. Andrew. jacket
Thanks for that feedback. I have been feeding them frozen blood worms. There is some uneaten food as they are messy eaters/dont always get it, although they seem to search and find most of what they missed the first time. Anyother suggestions for what to feed them? I have been using a gravel syphon, but probably not often enough, about once every two weeks.

There are plenty of web references, have a look at places like: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/4301/axolotlfood.htm http://inky.50megs.com/axolotlnewfaq.html There's also a YAHOO group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/axolotl_list/ Andrew.
