steveweast
Well...I'm in Napier right now and will be returning to LA this Fri....the 3rd.....so, I will miss your meeting. I would have loved to see what you guys are up to down here. I will be returning soon since I have family here in Napier. I went to the Mission concert last Saturday night.....man....can you boys put away the booze or what. I couldn't drink too much, though, this driving on the left...with all these roundabouts....takes some concentration. It's nice to have a bit of summer in the middle of winter (it was snowing at my house when I left the US).The lifestyle, wineries, and scenery here is so similar to my home in Portland.....it's like being home....except only 6 months apart. Well, I'm off to tour your wine country today. Steve
chimera
hmmm, drinking wine on a hot summers day at a vineyard or visiting fish tanks no where near the standard of your own,... tough choice, not
steveweast
Well....I had some free time this afternoon, so I decided to do some driving about to get the hang of this left sided driving....and....I came upon a fish store. Of course, I had to stop....it was kind of pitiful.... with minimal saltwater....BUT...they had a yellow tang for $204 nz....that's about $150us. Back home these fish go for about $20. Is this right ? Is this your market here ? Man...I feel for you guys if that's the norm. Steve
lduncan
Yeah, the market here is quite different to the states, but $200 is expensive for a yellow tang, they are usually around $130. We have three week quarantine etc here which significantly increased overheads, combined with low volumes, and the yellow tang being one the more expensive size due to shipping rates from Hawaii. I'm hoping to get to the States again in the middle of the year. I'd love to make a trip to Portland to check out your tank, and the new temperate tank, which looks amazing! The retail shops here in NZ from my experience are pretty average, most could present themselves a lot better. Layton
puttputt
yep, thats the norm as far as pricing goes. How lucky reefers are in the states, or even Australia.
Pies
Tangs have dropped in the north over the last few years. I paid $199 for my yellow, from Jansens in 03. Hope you enjoyed NZ Steave, look foward to seeing you blog about us on your site, and to see how the tank survived in the absense of its master Pie
reef
That is on the high side, Hawaii fishes are expensive due to the long trip. Most other fish are not to far off the USA pricing. I think our corals are sometimes cheaper that the states . Because our quatity is far lower than the states , the margins are higher. Takes time to move stock. The NZ dollar is not looking good either which wont help in the future. Steve ,the States weekly order in livestock would add up to our yearly order. steveweast
I just got off the phone with my tank sitter and all the automation is working as designed....he hasn't had to intervene yet. I'm really sorry for your livestock situation here....I'm starting to feel very spoiled for our availability. For that matter, I feel spoiled for our gas prices....I just filled the tank for $1.65 per liter.....our price is $1.90 per 4 liters (1 gal). lduncan
and labour got in  Apparently washed up incompetent school teachers demand high salaries. Looks like Labour found enough to create a whole caucus!
