Faran
You won't have nearly the same rate of growth as if you just feed them BBS/microworms 4-5 times a day. Wild fish don't grow all that well in nature so the more stable and protected they are, the better.
Seth
I could feed Micro worms as well as I always have these on hand just an idea ..... with my job I could never feed 4 times a day so maybe outside with liquid fry add for insoforia and feeding once at night with micro worms would work ?? alanmin4304
It is at the infusoria stage that the numbers get drastically reduced usually. If you can get them through that stage they are more of a breeze
Tanksman
I think you are skiting cause you live in the winterless north But Seriously I think they would be better off inside. I don't know your setup but there are all manner of predators outside just waiting for a chance to have a fishy dinner. And RATS can climb and get into just about anywhere just to name one of the worst offenders. Try setting up the dripping green water if you cant be home during the day. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/a-coup ... tml#127740
Alan
I'd say go for it but I'd be a bit concerned about the heat of the sun from 11am to 3 pm, you may have to supply shade for that period. When some killy keepers have raised they fry outside they have had great success. Saw over at EJ's place 2 weeks ago, in a wine barrel half, breeding Paradise fish and peppered corydora quite happily outside. Seth
I think im gonna try i do live in the winterless north but were getting some cold nights etc it would be in the shade on the hottest part of the day and it would be Heated with a heater and water circulation would be with a small bubbler split off my main line it would be right out side my garage and all plugs etc would be inide Im putting a rasied wooden lid on it with 1cm mesh so they should be safe from rats, kingfishers, cats etc I think ill feed generously with white worm in the after noon and set up a small tank or large jar for insofuria inside the garge and run a drip line outside into the tank I would get the culture up and running well before the fry were in there I think it will be a realitively low maintance set up Also im changing the container Im going to use A Large plastic Barrell about 70Liters
Alan
And to conserve the power usage, get some 50mm polystyrene for all around the tank. Bottom, sides, top at night time or cold days. Alan
Faran
Going back to food, I grew out a batch of bettas on 2 feedings a day of BBS and two feeds of microworms. They LOVE the worms and since they happily feed from the bottom they eat just about every last one. Kept a snail in there for leftovers, but he looked pretty hungry! alanmin4304
White worms are good for adults but too big for fry. Whiteworm and microworm are not the same.
MRSkz
I always have microworms for sale if you're needing some.
