slappers
IM with fay on this one you can buy the garlic at your LFS but would be cheaper to crush it yourself
lduncan
hi i have a blue tang... in a small reef tank There is the problem. It will more than likely continue to have problems with disease while it is in a confined space. These fish need room. If they don't have it, they will get disease, even with good water quality. Tanksman
Maybe someone on here may be able to take care of it for you while you sort out improved lodgings. Is it very contagious in an established balanced system?
ghostface
i thought that the garlic thing was a myth?
suphew
I read a thing on reefcentral about it, basically says there is no sientific proof that it works. Some labs have tried testing it with no success. But there are a lot of people that use it and believe it works. Marine white stop almost always seems to be stress related, maybe when people notice the white spot and start using garlic they also start keeping a closer eye on the tank and correct whatever is causing the stress?? lduncan
Marine white stop almost always seems to be stress related. Yip, the stress here is more than likely a blue tang being in a confined space. Layton
scholesy
We should probably ask how "small" his tank is. I didn't see a litre / gln figure in the post, might have missed it. What some aquarists call small is quite big to others. How many litres are we talking here?
chimera
...and perhaps more importantly: 1. how many other fish is he sharing that space with 2. is he 'boss' of the tank (ie: larger and more dominant than the other fish) My BT was happy in my old 4 footer, but was like a pig in sh#t in the 5 footer
Smallreefer
my tank is 100 litre he is the boss and the other occupants include 2 clowns a lemon pell dwarf angel and a cralbanded shrimp, i beleive the whit spot is now getting better, but have also added a cleaner shrimp to help control it in the future and feeding on garlic enriched food now and the takns is very stable system been runing for 3 years. thank you all for your help. cheers
Feelers
100L sounds awfully small - when these guys are talking about the "recommended" size, I think they mean at least around the 300L mark.
lduncan
Yip 100 litres is very small. It is the most likely cause of the blue tang getting whitespot. That sort of confined space for a tang like that is putting it under continual stress, making it more susceptible to disease. Also, water quality is harder to control in a tank that small, which adds to the problem. These are two of the main reasons why I, and others on this board, recommend a minimum tank size of 4 foot for people starting out in the hobby. It gives flexibility in the choice of livestock you can keep, and is large enough to make keeping stable water parameters and easier job. My advice: get a larger tank, or sell the tang. It really isn't suitable for a tank that size. Layton
jetskisteve
3 years Isnt a new tank or someone starting out, depending on the size of the BT he "could" be fine till he outgrows that system, Our current BT's are 50c size. lduncan
3 years Isnt a new tank or someone starting out I didn't say it was. I said these were two reasons why I recommend starting with a 4 foot minimum tank size. Layton
