quack
i have a green and a gold severum in a cichild community tank and they have layed eggs a few times but the eggs have been eaten i was wondering if they would be ok to breed in a 40l tank with a heater and just a bio filter(the grey foam ones)? also what else can i do to help them start spawing? thanks for any help
sharn
hmmm, probably not, even two in a standard two foot (average size, 15-20cm) would be a bit cramped id imagine water changes can kick start their spawning. sorry i couldnt be of more help
GeeTee
would it be possible to put them in the small tank to spawn and then remove the adult fish and hatch them yourself??
LYNDYLOO
Yep, I would have to go with that idea, Geetee, just what I was thinking. Great minds think alike a? Good Luck quack, hope it all goes well for you. I used to have Severums, beautiful Fishy's. Lynda
quack
ok so would the severums live in a tank with a jag(they wouldnt fit in his mouth). so is the 40l tank going to be ok to spawn in? what would be the best temp for the tank? do they need anything to lay the eggs on like a clay pot or anything? What colour would the babys be if one of the parents is gold and one green? is there anything that i can put in the tank to stop the eggs going white(and what makes them go white  ) thanks
Anthony
what did they lay there eggs on last time?
evilknieval69
if the eggs going white is fungus then you can put meth blue in the tank with them. i havent used it before so i dont know what the reccomended dosage is. someone will know
LYNDYLOO
Hi there, you could try a piece of Marley spouting placed in the tank on an angle, and they may or maynot spawn on that, sometimes the eggs that have turned white, mean that these have not been fertilised, and sometimes they will get fungus. Not sure what colour the bubba's would be, you will just have to wait and see. Happy Fishing Lynda
sharn
do you have access to a larger spawning tank? reason being unless they get down to business fairly quick it would be quite cramped, also unless you want to have a go at looking after your own fry youd want to leave them with the parents, and the wrigglers would most certanly fall prey to the jag!! how bout dividing the tank up? have a look at alans post in the discus baby post, good way there and that way no bubbas can get through! that way theyd have alot of room and wouldnt have to get stressed from moving tanks etc. do a google search on breeding sevs, should get some helpful tips and info
CraigMcN
I'm seeing pretty much exactly the same thing from my Severums. They lay eggs fairly regularly, but the eggs turn white in a day or so, and the next day they're all gone. It doesn't look like fungus on the eggs, they just go opaque. They have raised one brood to free swimming fry, so I know I've got a fertile pair, they just don't seem to be getting it right at the moment. I'm as interested as Quack in any advice C. quack
yeah it takes about 2 days for them to start going white and then they start dissapering. is this because the severums no that they wont hatch so they eat them? sharn
most cichlids pick out the unfertile eggs so if they get fungus it doesnt spread to the healthy ones. have they actually got wrigglers or fertile eggs before? maybe your two are the same sex or one of the is infertile?
