puttputt
i think there needs to be a bit of honesty here. I went to one of the LFS and asked for a price on a Tunze TS24 kit. Was given a price of over $1800 (special price for me, yeh right). No doubt the shop was purchasing this from the "approved supplier". I found them on special on seame.com, under $1000 delivered. Does that make me a parallel importer?? For what, wanting the best equipment for my hobby, for keeping my fish and corals in the best environment. How many people on this site haven't done exactly the same thing. How many people wouldn't have the tank they have now if if wasn't for people like jetski or even reef. Give the guy a break. Jimmy
Yip if you can import products and sell it cheaper than the approved supplier i say good on ya. If i was importing petrol and selling it cheaper than the oil companies, the people that are saving the money wont be complaining thats for sure. The ones that will be complaining are the ones that wont to rip people off.
cracker
Getting your own from overseas is fine and on selloing is a bit different to getting your own stuff. Unfortunately its not the supplier who makes the product so high. Blame the LFS. Their mark ups are criminal. Steve, if you took my agency, I would try and steal your one also, (If you are the agent anyway). Who is the agency for Aquamedic anyway? As far as I know, you aren't and I aint seen any in the shops.

JoeBlog
If you undercut or parallel import whilst knowing you are directly in the same nicvhe market as another you are simply an a**hole. Isn't this called "competition"? By definition, no one would enter a market if there wasn't economic profit to be made.
chimera
The ones that will be complaining are the ones that wont to rip people off jimmy couldnt have said it better if he tried that is the issue, hobby only had a few importers, more importers hit the market, prices (at least from what i've seen) drop, consumers happier, everyone still making a buck, however original importers pissed off coz now they have less in their back pocket regardless of the way someone does business, competition is a good thing to the consumer, so get over it. dogmatix
And what was the last piece of livestock you bought ? where did it come from? where most of the stock in your tank come from ? Dont get me wrong not trying to be offenisive just curiuos. Prices have not really come down at all they have instead remaned very stable, if anything gone up ever so slightly over the past month. I think i would know seeming i buy more stock than anyone else here. We are just lucky to have the supply that we have, but still the shops are being by-passed by the "consumer" every day. puttputt
I was intending to blame any one cookie, there just seems to be a lot of finger pointing at Steve in particular and he has done nothing but help me in this hobby.
wasp
Layton I'd be VERY surprised if sizes bigger than 24 x 12 is not available in ChCh. Easy to get here, don't see why not in ChCh. A specialist panel store will be a better bet than the ones you mentioned, let your fingers do the walking.
rossco
Being very new to this hobby...and now being exposed to a number of different sorces to purchase 'stuff' from, I make the following observations: There is a lotta stuff out there and a lot of conflicting advice. Thats where these forums are good. You can go to one spot and get all the conflicting advice and opinion you need in the one place Shipments come in to various retailers and rapidly go out the door. Although there is a lot of impulse buying there are also a lot of buyers looking for something specific. Few retailers even have their own website that promote their stock on hand. They must rely on buyers travelling the country and the impulse buy philosophy or think SW people aren't very techo... The biggest enemy of this hobby is failure, newbies especially need a higher degree of confidence they are following a successful path. Too much futile trial and error and their motivation and money dries up. What is the 'product' they are trying to sell - bits and pieces or the end result - a great fish tank? When someone starts putting together a business doing that, showing people how to put together a great SW fish tank, and supply them with the stuff to do it, they won't have competition! cracker
Isn't this called "competition"? By definition, no one would enter a market if there wasn't economic profit to be made. NO, Its not competition....its an agency. Just like FORD or HOLDEN. You wouldnt be able to get hold of brand new vehicles and undercut Giltrap HOLDEN would you, nor would you expoect to. Whats the bloody difference. REEF has a signed contract with these suppliers, JUST LIKE FORD or HOLDEN. Parallel importers ARE assholes and make a hell of a lot of genuine businesses suffer. There should be rules against it. THE WAREHOUSE DOESNT even PARALLEL ImPORT, they just import normally.

Thats fine too, but selling you DELTEC products is unethical, Why didnt he sell you an aquamedic skimmer? They used to say they were better. Ask NIck his business partner. Tried to say to me it was the best on the market....pfffft.

Yeah, they seems to be available in longer sheets, but nothing suitable for making a single 2m x 1.6m base that i've found. Goldpine do 25mm, but again only 2.4 x 1.2 .
