CraigMcN
Hi All, Just got back from a weeks holiday to find my neon gourami with a case of popeye on his left side. He still "seems happy" but looks freakish and unpleasant Any advice on the best treatment? He's in a community tank at the moment but I've got a quarantine tank I can put him into if necessary (is popeye infectious?) Thanks. Craig. livebearer_breeder
Then put him in the Quarintine tank straight away. Add some Aquarium Salt and if you dont already have any you can try either malafix or Cure-ex, both available from any petstore, follow instructions on back. Sounds as if your Gourmie is past helping. Generally there is nothing you can do after a pop eye infection takes hold as far as saving the eye goes, best you can hope for after treatment, is that he keeps one eye and lives happily, Fish can compinsate well. Caryl
It is my understanding (although I could be wrong - it has been known on the rare occasion ) that pop-eye affects both eyes. If it is just one eye I would be more inclined to think physical damage. No cure for it but it will eventually heal over. The fish can manage perfectly well with only one eye. Caryl
Just did some research. It can affect one or both eyes Pop eye is only a symptom of an internal bacterial infection and not a disease in itself. Livebearer is right about using the Melafix. livebearer_breeder
it might 'affect' both eyes, whether it 'infects' both eyes is another story, I have only ever once seen a really bad case of Popeye with a fish that had both its eyes almost exploding out of its skull. Other than that I have only seen cases with one eye being 'infected'. As I say treat for it, better to be safe than sorry. Shae
djoon7
i read somewhere that one cause of pop-eye is tuberculosis and if this is the case it is uncurable and the fish has to be euthanized... but if its only one eye i dunno, might not be popeye at all
