Luke*
Usually too much light, a lot of marine tanks seem prone to this. Is it by a window?

Sparkypn
we have had tank for about 3 months before that was setup (by previous owner, same setup) for about 12 months
Luke*
The good thing is brown algae comes off easier than green algae usually so use a good quality paper towel or some other cleaning device to remove it.
HelifaxNZ
You would get more answers if this was posted in the Saltwater section. My Marine tank has been up and running for 2 months and have the brown algae. This is normal because there are phosphates and silica in the water which the algae feeds on. Eventually it will go away, but what has been recommended and I'm currently using is Rowa-Phosphate remover. Basically place some in a filter sock and put in with your filter. This stuff will last for ages, 6mths + and will absorb all the phosphate and will not seep it back into the water. Good luck and if it is still a problem, post in the Saltwater forum. Cheers.
