discus dude
Hi All, I have A 3year old Solid green breeding male discus with A partner in A breeding tank. He is very tame, to the point where I "could" lift him out of the tank by hand. Something I've noticed is when I put my hand in the tank, close to him, he gives off A virbration [like A high speed pulse]. I can feel it up to an inch away from his body even though I can't see any phyical signs of him doing it. Has anybody experinced this? Very interesting, maybe A form of communication??? Goldie
wow no I have not experienced that. My discus feed from my fingers and watch for me to enter the room. One is shyer than the other. Maybe your discus is in love with your hand. I think that sure is exciting.
discus dude
Hi Goldie, I have had that comment already, lol. But there maybe some truth in that because I got my wife and son to put there hands in the tank today and they felt nothing, when I put my hand back in , he went nuts with virbractions. I have also had another comment saying it could be A form of sonar, although I have put A staethascope? on the tank and there was no sound, unlike dolphns which make quite loud noise when using theres. So yes quite exciting alright! I keep researching and if I find anything of intrest I'll post it!!! Regards Andrew
Caryl
Don't take this the wrong way Andrew but is it possible you are imagining it? It seems odd to me you seem to be the only one who can feel it. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon. Perhaps he just loves you

Goldie
weell I believe you for after watching my tank for awhile I saw one of my discus communicate with the other this was. Shimming the whole body and obviously vibrating. The second discus moved away to feed and the first discus went back to normal behaviour. I had never noticed this behaviour before. Caryl
Ahh but shimmying the body is part of the courtship goldie. Andrew said he could feel the vibrations but not see them. I doubt the discus is mistaking his hand for another discus. Do you wear glasses Andrew?
cat
I too had a Discus that communicated with me but not in the same loving way!!  If he could have eaten me he would have. Discus body with Piranha attitude. He has since been rehomed with someone that can handle him and doesnt mind his nasty traits. (eg has never had a 'nice' Discus. Interesting to know yours finds your hand a stimulating object!!! You must have just what Discus is looking for in a hand.  Wonder why your fish does this though? I am sure there must be some explanation for it other than you hand turns the fish on. discus dude
Hey folks! Goldie! Carly is rite, They do shimmer, when courting, and at first I thought the same thing. But he's not when I have my hand in with him, Although, he could be giving off these pulses when shrimming. Both the f/m and m, shimmer when courting and there both tame [ie] but it's only the male that pulses, not saying the female dosn't, it's just she's not done it to me! Caryl, I don't wear glasses, why do you ask? Regards Andrew

discus dude
Back again!!! I don't know if many of you are familliar with Fred Goodall at DPH, But this guy is A wealth of info, and has helped me SOOOO!! much, He's brilliant at solving problems with Discus via email, and I deffinitly wouldn't be as far ahead in breeding these awsome fish if it wasn't for him!! So I've posted his comments... Hi Andrew: Not to that extent... always thought it was "fish language" for "hey good looking.... want a good time?????" \ as my thought was that hand sort of triggered mating response in males... but could well be "happy fish" vibes. With Regards Fred Goodall
Caryl
I only asked about the glasses in case it was possible others could see the vibrations but you couldn't because your eyesight wasn't as good as you thought it was. It is interesting the male does it but not the female. I will try and remember to ask the discus keepers at our meeting tonight if they have observed the phenomenon. cat
Tell me more Cat, I sort of understand what your saying, [aggressive] but what was it he was doing?? He/she would charge the tank whenever anyone came into view. It would actually attack your hand if you put it in the tank. It meant buiness. I had some club members visit and they couldn't believe how agressive it was. It would just about knowck itself out trying to get at you through the glass. I did lots of tets on the tank to make sure the conditions were perfect too. It was a big Discus that had had hole in the head disease early in life so I think it had lost a few brain cells along the way. Beautiful fish to look at. It is now as happy as larry in a hex tank at my friends house sitting on the bench and watching everything. It is still nasty but nowhere near as bad now as it has got used to being so close to activity around her kitchen. I am just happy he/she is happy. cat
No I don't keep Discus anymore. I do really like them but they cause too much stress to me. I prefer to stick to my Angels and various other odds and sods.
