chimera
The quote I made was written incorrectly as I was meant to say I don’t sell things for the sake of it to make money. fair enough

suphew
I cant see why people keep bagging Reef for making (or not making) a profit. 1) Supply and demand, reef could if he wanted charge what he likes but he doesn't. His only real competition is the internet and plenty of us are happy to not have to commit a couple of thousand $ over the internet. 2) Do you know what normal retail markups are like?? You do understand that when shops have 50% sales they aren't making a huge lose? Normal retails markups start at 100%, some things like cloths get marked up 200-300%, compare what your LFS charges for fluro tubes compared to electrical wholesalers. From what I have seen of Reefs prices he might be adding 20-30% 3) How many of you would be willing to spend the amount of time that Reef does for us? If I was doing some thing for some one else that was consuming 5, 10 , 20 hours a week of my time you can be damn sure I would want to be paid for it. 4) If you dont like it stop complaining and go somewhere else. Brianemone
no one was bagging him for making money out of it. like you said no-on ein their right mind would put in that amount of effort unless there was some kind of benefit. suphew
So why does he offer me a Deltec AP902 for over $2k+ when I know for a fact that his buy price is considerably lower than this? That sounds like he's in it for profit - and understandably, its an import business. But comments like that quoted above is just bullshit and a complete sales pitch. Say it like it is. Oh yeah no one's bagging him........
Brianemone
they were definatly bagging that fact that he said he doesnt import things for the money. and chimera eplained that it was fair enough to make money from it but not to say that you import for the love of the hobby. Feelers
I notice reef dissappeared from the thread long ago. Take it easy guys - its just fish keeping. Back on topic how is a beckett different to a straight venturi? Im geussing they perform a lot better than a normal venturi? And does anyone know of a good explanation of a needle wheel? Im assuming that air is sucked into the "disk" and separated into bubbles, but I havent read anything in-depth.
wasp
A beckett is a venturii, kinda. The beckett venturiis are sold in the US, for people to put on their pond fountains, so as the water passes through it allows air to mix in so the fountain is kind of frothy. Somebody twigged that this might make for a good protein skimmer, and so the beckett skimmer was born. Many beckett skimmers are home made, but a becket skimmer is any skimmer incorporating the beckett fountain venturii. Needlewheel skimmers, instead of having a normal impellor in the pump, the impellor has lots of little pins on it. There is an air tube just before the pump so air is sucked in with the water, and as it passes through the rapidly spinning needles on the impellor, the bubbles are broken up into a small fine size. The quality needlewheels are well researched and designed, and break the bubbles into the correct size, and all the same size, to get maximised efficiency.
