0pius
Hello All, I came across this article today about mangroves as an efficient means to remove nitrates but they go as far as to say they they remove organics so well from the water that they act as a replacement for a protein skimmer. Here is the article http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/nitratecontrol/a/aa051398.htm Am very keen to hear others opinions
wasp
Mangroves are an idea that came and went mainly in the US, a few years ago. If you had truckloads of them it would work, but in general they are not effective due to the slow growth rate. Good as a protein skimmer? Sorry - he's dreaming. Nonetheless, mangroves can make an interesting addition to a tank.
Feelers
A mangrove plant in an aquarium would look awesome
Pies
Everything i've read say its a fun thing to try, but as layton said the nuetrient uptake of the mangroves is so minimal its unlikley to make a difference, unless you had an impractically large grove comparted to you display. I was going to do it with my new system, but after reading and talking to people who were doing it, or had tried it I decised it would just be a complete waste of time and energy. Brianemone
i'd do it for the look of it but not for filtration purposes
JoeBlog
I have one, but solely for aesthetic purposes. It grows sooooo slow that I can’t imagine it importing much of anything. Quite a cool additiona to the sump though.

0pius
What about taking full grown mangroves and putting them in a sump/refugium would that be what would be needed to get them going as a natural filter
lduncan
It you can find room in your refugium for something like this maybe: The other problem I have with mangroves is that they are esturine plants. That generally means they inhabit environments which are loaded in P. Which is not really the environment your trying to created when keeping a reef. In short they like dirt, most corals don't. It's hard to create both environments at they same time in a tank, without running into problems at some point. A big skimmer and live rock are your friends.
