Dividing Tank

Frances

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know a cheap way or actually any way to divide a fish tank into seperate compartments? I have a couple of 3 ft tanks that I would like to seperate into say 3 compartments to seperate the sexes etc. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated

Ohhh the joys of needing more tank space hehehehehe :P

Sheets of glass or plastic will do the trick. Make a frame and use that shade cloth stuff.

Dennis your reply didn't make sense to me. Are you saying you can buy tank dividers at pet shops?

Don't subdivide all your tanks Frances, you will need a growing-on tank for all those fry!

:D Thanks for the replies guys :0) Ummmmm wondering what I would make the frame out of? I will also take a look in the pet shops to see what they have available. Im not planning on dividing all of my tanks just a couple of them. Another question on this topic... How do i heat the divided tank? will the one heater that I have in the tank now do the trick? And do I need to filter each compartment seperately? Gosh the questions are flowing now... I look forward to the replies. Im beginning slow and have yellow and blue guppies at the moment but the waiting for fry is killing me do you think it is to soon to buy more fish in different colours? If you dont think its to soon does anyone have any pretty guppies that they are selling? and that wont cost me an arm and a leg to get to Rotorua? I have the different coloured fish in different tanks and will be keeping the seperated so that they can be line bred. I think I visit to Peter is due hehehehehe......

If you can buy clip-on dividers then that would be easiest. My thoughts of making a frame (either wood or metal) to attach netting to was so the water would flow through and you wouldn't need to heat each side and get another filter.

Each compartment will need a heater and filter, unless you have an under tank heatpad along the whole tank, and a flow-on filtration system so the water circulates through the whole tank.

If you are wanting to line breed or encourage a particular colour, then control your impatience and don't get any more colours. You will need a fishroom to cope with all the offspring! :D

I've used that plastic shade cloth stuff before too. I just used two pieces of aluminium wire as poles down the sides of the tank. These were threaded through the shade cloth to hold it in place. It kind of looked like a tennis net across the tank. Seemed to work quite well.

Another thing I have used is old undergravel filter plates turned over on their sides and held in place with rocks and gravel on the bottom. On the sides to stop it from falling over I used some rubber suction cups (normally for holding tubes/ heaters in place) either side. This worked quite well and was strong enough to keep two red devils apart. However small fish would have been able to swim past the gap on the side between the filter plate and the glass.

I also didn't have any problems with temperature variation between sides that did or didn't have heaters. The water circulation through the divider was still sufficient to have an even temperature profile with just one heater.

Hi

Here in Melbourne, you can buy tankdividers. They are taylor-made to suit your tank. But, not cheap. What they are, a size almost the size if your tank, made of material like milkcrates, and coverd with stiff netting. Similar to flyscreens, only stiffer. (nylon, not steel or aluminium). Because of the price, I made my own, to keep the young fry away from hungry mummie. Another way is, get 2 or 3 panes of glass, the same size of the width of the tank, insert it and use suctioncups to stop it moving. This is for temporary measurments.

John

PS. Sorry Midas, did not read your post. Actually that is almost what I meant.
