warick hearn
Since I took the bio balls out of my sump a few days ago Ive had tiny air bubbles being released back into the main tank...it seems to happen when the water from the overflow hits the water in the sump...does anyone know a way of stopping it happen.....the water goes through filter wool before it drops into the sump. Warick.
misnoma
Putting some baffles in your sump will help, stops the bubbles actually reaching the return pump.
Fay
I had the same problem when I set up the new sump< I fixed it by putting a milk crate down the end the water comes in so it lifted the pipe out of the water before dropping onto filter wool then through some rock in the crate. Doesn't look very pro but works well. The filter wool seems to help dirt entering the tank. If you want I will take a photo for you.
Fay
On second thought why not put the balls back if they worked?
lduncan
try putting a 'U' at the bottom of the return pipe, so the water is entering the sump like a bubbling spring, rather than straight down. It can help to get rid of the bubbles faster, as they are not continually pushed down into the water. Layton
Pies
Bubbles are a hastle. 1 they look shite, 2 they pop at the surface and cause salt spray. I've been fighting mine for over 6 months now. I use defusers on the plumbing, and baffles in the sump. The baffles are low, 1cm gap. I've also setup a 3 foot long live rock sponge filter (thats natural sponge without light, not mechnical filter wool or anything else). Am going to be interested to see how that goes. cracker
Also, try and remove all your bio balls and filter wool as these assist with Nitrate production. if you have lots, do it slowly so as not to shock the bacteria population. Even a small pouch of filter wool can produce heaps of nitrate. Also you could just try and move your return pump as far away from the sump return as possible. This will help with the "Fine bubble" problem.
