nickyboi
Ok so when I bought these two the guy reckoned the lighter one was female, however some people who have come around said that the brightness was not the indication, more so the black on the fins underneath and the only real way was to vent them, im too scared to even attempt this at the mo but am wondering what kind of fish the lighter one is? Is it a Female Yellow Lab and why is the colour so light compared to other females I have seen? Sorry about the Quality of pics, the little buggers never stay still!!!! The so called female... The Male... Both together for a comparison...

Tropheus
Would u want to breed the female? Her colours not the best, especially compared to the brightly coloured male! There r brighter females around. Fish that is Just woundering
herefishiefishie
The reason people say to vent sex electric yellows is they have been line bred for years. So differences between males & females are hard to tell. The lighter colour of the fish is due to this line breeding, most populations in the world steam back to one pair. heres a read http://www.sydneycichlid.com/content/?page_id=132 Frenchy

Fish that is Just woundering i did want to but now knowing that she is a very light one and an unusual colour for yellow lab there is prob no point in trying to breed her, just got another wee one in the weekend however the male is 4 times her size! so will see what happens! herefishiefishie
The fry will more than likely turn out nice. I read a report somewhere once upon a time... The fry can have 80%(I think, maybe slightly more or less) of the males genes. Look at how electric yellows have been breed for generations, stem back to one pair, & most electric yellows on the market pretty good, barring the odd dull batch. So when raising fry, cull the dull drab ones as they grow up. You should still have alot of nices ones. I hope the new edition does well, give it plenty of cover, yellows work best when they are all around the same size. Frenchy
nickyboi
cull them? And the most humane way to do this is...? Puting them to sleep in the fridge is my best guess? (Do this with crayfish)
herefishiefishie
Cull, yep. When breeding fish its the best thing to do for the hobby. Discus are the worse for it, pointy heads, poor shapes, undeveloped gill plates...... Quickest way for me to cull anything is to throw them to something bigger. Kills 2 birds with one stone.
